Tolerant hosting for exit node.

Hello list, I was hoping to get a good suggestion from here for a hosting provider that is tolerant with Tor exit nodes. I went through the mailing list archive a few months back and there weren't any good suggestions on hosting providers. Also, I checked the 'GoodBadISPs' page in the Tor wiki but it is pretty outdated and I already got burned with one provider from there: ITLDC, it was added on 2016-04-23 but they bluntly stated that they DO NOT tolerate exit nodes after 2 abuse complaints, my exit node was running for 1 month there. One of the abuses was handled but with the second one they basically wanted me to block HTTP/S traffic on the VPS. I am not sure who edits and keeps track of the mentioned page but it would be a good idea to remove the mentioned provider from there so other people wont waste their money. Hope to get some recommendations since I want to support the network with an exit node. Thanks in advance! With regards, jack

Two-step abuse management?

Hi! tl;dr: We're thinking about introducing an auto responder to abuse mail which then requires clicking a link or replying to the mail again before the complaint actually reaches a human. What do you think? Can you help us set this up? So far, we do not have any auto responder for abuse mails. I always thought it was important to be friendly and get back to everyone individually, even if at the core we're reusing mail templates. There is a difference if a human gets back to you within a few hours, or you immediately get clearly a auto-sent something that basically tells you there's not much that can be done. But actually, most of what we're seeing is automated notification mail, and lately we also see more and more spam that survives the spamassassin. An ideal system would track used addresses, and only send an auto-response from our end once per sender every few months. We have very limited resources for abuse management, and it would be great to filter out the noise better than we currently do. Did anyone set up an infrastructure like that before? How would you do it? Also, if you just want to help with our abuse management, let me know! Hi, Iain - the atlas maintainer - asked on twitter if relay operators at the relay operators meetup in Montreal have feature requests for atlas [1]. I suggested family-level pages where an operator of more than one relay can see all the relays of his family including aggregated (stacked) graphs for the graphs that are already available on a per-relay level. Before filing this as a trac ticket - as Iain - suggested, I wanted to ask around if others would find that useful as well because it probably makes only sense to implement it if there are more people actually finding it useful. My idea is designed to protect the exit node against a DNS attack from the owner of the DNS server. Not from the ISP or an attacker monitoring the traffic going in and out of the ISP data center. Email suggesting to send DNS requests to a specific open DNS

This email suggests to change the DNS server my node use, and gives me a specific IP address to use. Good idea. The Nos Oignons folks had some scripts you can hack together to measure and visualize your group of relays, but I spent a while hunting and I couldn't find it now. While we're doing feature requests, once the "per family" view exists, I would want to use the same view on other groups of relays, like "per country" and "per AS". Hey everyone, I haven't been a relay operator for very long, so please pardon my ignorance, but doesn't Atlas already link to all family members, where you can click on each and view that relays statistics? I can see the suggested benefit of having all that info on one landing page (so to speak), but I really appreciate the simplicity of the site in its current form. My vote would be for a top 100 (or higher) option in the drop down menu that actually works. Overall, I think the site is great, keep up the great work tor project! Rate setting in tor

Hi I've a question regarding the rate setting in torrc and tor honoring it. I've set up a tor relay with following rate settings: RelayBandwidthRate 2048 KBytes RelayBandwidthBurst 2048 KBytes But using arm, I'm seeing that tor is not honoring these settings, with bursts frequently exceeding the value. Force OpenSSL AES-NI usage on a VPS without the AES CPU flag passthrough

Hello, Today I found that it is possible to force OpenSSL enable the use of CPU AES acceleration even if it doesn't detect the "aes" CPU flag. Many VPS hosts configure their hypervisors in a way that does not have the flag passed through into VPSes, even though all their host nodes surely have CPUs with support for AES-NI. In my experience hosts have not been forthcoming in reconfiguring their systems to include that flag passthrough. But it turns out we can force OpenSSL to believe AES is supported, even if the CPU does not report it. This can be done with the "OPENSSL_ia32cap" environment variable. Searching around, all I found was scenarios to use it for disabling AES-NI (for testing), e.g.: https://mjanja.ch/2013/11/disabling-aes-ni-on-linux-openssl/ I believe the syntax used there applies "xor" over the real flag values, e.g. OPENSSL_ia32cap="~0x200000200000000" to disable AES. But what if you need to force-enable it. For Tor this leads to higher bandwidth utilization and lower CPU usage (which will actually make your VPS host happier :) But how to apply that to Tor? Well, for some initial testing I just chose to add the following line to /etc/init.d/tor (not using systemd here), right after "#! /bin/bash": export OPENSSL_ia32cap="+0x200000200000000" (but this will get overwritten and removed by the next Tor version upgrade). Seems to work just fine, my CPU usage is half of what it was before, at similar bandwidth levels. So now it has headroom to ramp up further. A word of caution, firstly always test as shown above to verify that it works. I believe if the underlying CPU actually doesn't support AES, all programs trying to use it, including "openssl speed", will crash outright, with an incorrect instruction error, or somesuch. So there is no risk to jeopardize encryption strength or security of Tor. Also even if it works now, it may stop working down the line if the host migrates your VPS to a node with older CPU, one which doesn't support AES. But migrations of customers between do not happen very often, and in fact all CPUs used today in a hosting environment should support AES, as that's been implemented in server (and even desktop) CPUs a very very long time ago. Tor-arm failure

Hello people, I'm not a python programmer so I need some help with a problem. I have a number of Tor nodes and some bridges. Occasionally, when I install tor_arm I get a divide by zero message as follows: Exception in thread Thread-69: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/python2.7/threading.py", line 801, in __bootstrap_inner selt.run() File "/usr/share/arm/util/sysTools.py", line 517, in runnewValues["cpuAvg"] = total CpuTime / uptime ZeroDivisionError: integer division or modulo by zero Exception in thread Thread-70 ...... I'm running debian jessie in this most recent example. 2 G memory, 20 G hdd. This is a bridge with only some daily use but typically 10-12 circuits. Reason of no DIR port will be Accounting Max Enabled, although every unlikely I would reach the max I set, I use those settings to give me instant total usage within ARM While searching for some suitable wording if I ever get abuse complaints again, and searching the legal risks within Europe of Exits, I was rather surprised found NATO published a detailed appraisal of Tor. "Port" : "ectory Service support", reason); Common reasons include "AccountingMax enabled" and "BandwidthRate under 50KB". In general, it's fine for Tor to decide not to advertise your DirPort. Everything else is still working fine. DIR Port

DIR port on my relay and mini exit as being there on Atlas. The DIR port is open, indeed the DirPortFrontPage can be seen. Bandwidth is “fast” The exit is very limited in scope to avoid abuse claims, so few ports forwarded such as 443, but not 80. Is that the reason not showing? Gerry

Tor relay making normal internet unusable

Dear Group, I have some spare bandwidth and want to run an exit relay buy when I do the normal internet is so slow and I have to fill out so many captcha that it makes it unusable! Any ideas why? I think google etc block by default tor exit nodes. I was thinking about spinning up a vm and running tor on that. When I run as a bridge I don't see much traffic. Any ideas? Cheers!

IP Forwarding ON - on the host with tor relay - any risk ?

Tor Install Error

While using apt-get to update my tor relay to a 'recommended' version I keep encountering this error: W: An error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used. GPG error: http://deb.torproject.org trusty InRelease: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 74A941BA219EC810 W: Failed to fetch http://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org/dists/trusty/InRelease I've read several approaches to remedying this error, however I'm wondering what would be the 'most widely accepted as correct' method of dealing with the error? Hello. I was running a Tor Relay for the past month (fingerprint 71BEBB61D0D35234D57087D035F12971FA315168) at my university and it seems that it got banned somehow. I got messages on my log like the following: http status 400 ("Fingerprint is marked rejected -- please contact us?") response from dirserver '171.25.193.9:443'. Please correct. I was hoping to get some information regarding this ban and how I could correct whatever was done wrong in order to get my relay up and running again. Best wishes, Marcus Rodrigues.

Any IP allocations available out there?

Thanx to all here on the list for input to earlier posts. Helped a lot. Question I have is there anywhere where you can get a block of IP address or lease as I'm in the process of getting a 10/10Mb SHDSL service(No flaming data cap :-)) here in AU but I want an IP range that abuse questions can be forwarded to me. The service provider doesn't provide ARIN registration but said if I have my own block I can update the BG and manage it my self. Regards, Paul PS - the best price I can do at the moment is $550pm - *SIGH* - but worth it.

Thanx niftybunny, It's more political than anything. With the constant changes in policy driving censorship I feel that having a strong presence is important. At the moment there are 50 nodes in Australia with the fastest running at 357Kbs and only two exit nodes - fastest is 100Kbs. Its a reflection on the state of politics and the level of service that is provided by ISP's. Unable to compile Tor

Up until now i've relied on updating Tor using yum update but the version on the repos is currently 0.2.9.10 . Arm reports this as unrecommended, so compiling from source looks to be the only option. Bandwidth Question

Dear List, I run a middle node at home. I jacked up my bandwidth from 300/500 KB to 500/700 KB a fortnight ago, and my usage has more than doubled. I run it on Verizon FIOS at home; I'm looking at about 650-750 G/month estimate now from vnstat. I read that Verizon starts to take notice if I get to a TB/month, so I am asking for advice on easing this back if necessary. I can limit the daily bandwidth - or can I just ease down the bandwidth? Clearly each time I increased the bandwidth I got more connexions; would they drop off if I went back to my old bandwidth? I'm a little unclear how long it would take other relays to attach to other middle relays once they have found mine. The more general question behind this is: is it better to have a higher bandwidth for a limited time each day or a lower bandwidth up all day? Another odd thin is atlas will say its down for say three hours but there are up to 1900 connections thumping away from other relays. The node has been running longer but I restarted thinking something was wrong. LOL But like I said its not a problem - I'm wait to see if the VM provider has an issue and at 5 euros per month I'll run others in other country's for that money. significant rise in fail2ban alerts for ssh abuse

Dear all, we receive a significant rise of ssh login abuse mails which reach us and unfortunately our providers. By significant I mean an amount that starts flooding our abuse inbox. All abuse emails are structured the same way and point to Fail2Ban as originator. Do we have just bad luck and someone uses our severs to brute force all of SSH out there OR is there a new Fail2Ban or Linux distribution release which fosters or enables this fail2ban abuse mails be default ? As far as I know the functionality of Fail2Ban is old. If there would be a Linux distribution which enables this I would like to talk to the maintainer and let him know that he at least tries to read the correct abuse entry from ripe instead of bothering our provider as well. For a limited time we will now reject port 22. But really do not like this solution. After suffering the loss of maatuska's bwauth several months ago, we have re-provisioned it thanks to the gracious help from https://coldhak.ca/ It has completed an initial scan of the network[0] and is reporting its data here: http://198.51.75.50/bwauth/bwscan.V3BandwidthsFile This week I intend to flesh out the remaining aspects of the bwauth (debug logging, alerting to detect downtime, get a proper domain name, ssl cert, etc) as well as do some sanity checking on its output. If all goes well, I'll submit it to maatuska for inclusion at the end of the week. But I wanted to announce it here, both to give an update, and let the community take a look at its output and see if anything looks fishy. What causes circuits to collapse?

Hi, I have configured a Tor bridge to go through a particular Tor guard relay (that I also own), as an experiment. Upon initialization I am getting this warning: "Your guard [fingerprint] is failing an extremely large amount of circuits. This could indicate a route manipulation attack, extreme network overload, or a bug. Success counts are 52/275. Use counts are 67/67. 268 circuits completed, 0 were unusable, 217 collapsed and 1 timed out. For reference, your timeout cutoff is 60 seconds". Both relays are running Tor 3.0.10. I have never received this warning before. How do I interpret the numbers above, and debug the issue? The guard is far from saturating its network bandwidth. It has 98% idle CPU and plenty of free memory. I am not running any attacks against it. It does use a tuned-up sysctl.conf but I have never had any problems with it. "tcpdump icmp" does not show anything interesting. There are no warnings in the guard's log. Thanks, Igor

All your relays are operated in AS "Online S.a.s" - which is already the second biggest AS in terms of tor network capacity. At this stage we are not planning to run it for more than 6 months or so (but this might change). We understand that your concern is primarily about capacity diversity not trust in "Online S.a.s" since anyway it's already the second largest provider for Tor relays. Our experiments are not related to the traffic (and since all our relays are part of the same family at most one of them would be used in any circuit). We are using Online S.a.s because it it is cheap (I guess it's the same reason why others use it). We will check in the next couple of days if there is an alternative low cost provider. Hi all, Have been running a mirror for a couple of years and haven't had much time to dedicate to and exit node but have finally committed to it. Found a provider that doesn't seem to have a cap on data and it will cost me about five euros a month. Question I have is two fold. First I find that atlas.torproject.org sometime says the node is down but its running and connected. Secondly how dose the bandwidth throttling work. I have set it to 300kbits with 500kbit burst but I can see the in/out traffic staying over 1mb for large periods of time and bursting to 7/8mb. Its not a problem just curios. keepyourprivcay: Introducing a new 100 mbit/s relay

Hello fellow operators of tor relays out there! :) I'd like to introduce my new relay, it's called keepyourprivacy and hosted in the Netherlands, at a provider which is known for high uptime and great network connectivity. Because it isn't very cheap, it's not very common used for tor relays, so i think it's a good choice for a better network diversity. :) Sure, i liked the idea of running a cheap relay at Kimsufi or something, but there are so many of this relays out there, which isn't good for the basic idea of Tor. It's running on a dedicated server with an dedicated 100 mbit/s full-duplex uplink, which is only used for Tor. So over 60 TB can be pushed each month. In these days Tor needs more help than ever, because VPN bans becoming more and more common - look at China or Russia for example. https://atlas.torproject.org/#details/59633E5F42DDA009798B173944367D7F50B1B… I'm also playing with the idea to change this relay to an exit node, but i'm a little bit worried about possible legal consequences. I would run it with an reduced policy however, but there is still the risk, that someone is doing fraud - or even worse - transmit child pornography over it. And that's nothing i'd like to be involved with it. But i know that it would help the Tor network even more. But for now, i think the middle relay with high uptime, capacity and with a not so common provider like OVH or online.net will still help the community to improve the connectivity. Two research groups studying onion services and running relays

Hi relay operators! I want to let you know about two upcoming research projects by academic research groups. The tl;dr is that they're running relays to do certain measurements, and so far as we can tell the proposed methodology is safe enough and worthwhile enough, but we invite you (and everybody) to evaluate it too. Hi, I often run my SSH sessions via Tor using tsocks. Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? : I could be wrong, but I think this "dropbear" service is most likely something malicious, running on one or more Tor exit nodes, attempting to collect passwords of people logging in this way. If a user ignored the error (or trusts the fingerprint without verifying), their password, and further activity on the shell could all be captured by the attacker. Since Tor makes my client connections anonymous, and the dropbear is seen even for hosts that don't provide an SSH service, makes me think this attack is indiscriminate, not targetted only at me or my servers. The first time you connect to some machine, be careful to verify the fingerprint through independent means. Pay attention to notices like this of changed key fingerprints.
