Tor blog - first steps
by Eric Schaefer 10 May '14

10 May '14

Hey everyone, I’m new to the Tor community (Hi!) but I’ve had some relative success with migrating Drupal blogs to other formats. As the debate around which static site generator starts up, I figure that I could help with just moving the old posts out into usable HTML chunks (re this). Could andrew/lunar point me where to get a snapshot of the database and code for the blog? Thanks! -ultrasandwich

[Back-end][CMS]
by Olssy 25 Jan '14

Starting this thread to discuss the different solutions, what they offer and how many people have used them before. I know Drupal better than other CMSs and it fits the requirements although static generation is not out of the box but supported by a module(like most things in Drupal). Content is usually created and modified through a web interface that offers either source code view or a WYSIWYG GUI but can be template based using text files on disk. Can anyone explain a bit how Jekyll would work in the context of the Tor website? Do users need to create the content on disk or through a web interface?

Graphic Design thoughts
by Robert Charlton 24 Jan '14

24 Jan '14

Hello, community. I should first introduce myself to this list. I'm a semi-long time exit relay operator. Although I'm still a newcomer, I have a few years of graphics design experience, I'm good with Linux systems and decent with servers, I do a bit of web development and design, and I'm currently learning Javascript. In addition, I can be useful when it comes to writing. Although I have a lot on my plate at the moment, I'm a big fan of the Tor project and I'm willing to help out wherever I can (whenever I can). I have a total of 1 (one!) website, which is a Tor exit relay notice site (http://68.118.171.187/) that I've put way too much work into, since it's the only thing that I can work on as far as websites go. I thought I'd offer some input into this discussion. As has been said before, we really should get a style guide going before we design any actual branding, logos, etc. I'm not too sure about where we're at in this undertaking, but has anybody tried reaching out to the EFF about this? They have a knack for good design, and they've done artwork for Tor before. They're never reluctant to help out the Tor project. Maybe they can help with this. Just an idea. Now, in complete disregard for what I just said, I'd like to talk a bit about the logo. This is, I think, the most important part of our project's presentation. Once the style guide is finished, it should be one of the first things to (re-)design. Marck Al's visual identity mockup is a start. Thanks for putting in some work, Marck. The onion layers concept is something I'd like to see be kept in the new logo. It's an homage to the design of Tor itself. I like the 'O' design. In a way, it gives an impression of the layers of an onion (which is the goal of this design, of course). It's alright, but it would be better to give more emphasis on the concept of layers. Perhaps add more 'layers' to the 'O' and make them less thick? I also like the way the layers get darker as they move outward, once again in homage to the way Tor itself is designed (more and more layers of encryption added as data moves through the circuit). As noted in a post to the Tor subreddit (https://pay.reddit.com/r/TOR/comments/1vvren/green_a_good_colour_for_tor/) the rest of the logo is a bit generic. It's a bit corporate-looking as well. I prefer the rounded corners of the original logo's typeface; it gives off a more friendly vibe. As a sidenode, getting more involved with the subreddit about the redesign is a great way to get some discussion going and opinions formed. I'm not much for designing from scratch, but I've attached a little something that I threw together which replaces the middle onion symbol with Marck's 'O' symbol. We haven't yet decided upon the new color palette, but I've colored it a nice earthy blue color (blue chill to be exact) for now. Inkscape SVG and regular PNG versions are attached. Don't be too hard on it. It's just a rough mockup. :) Hope this wasn't too long of a message. Interested in your feedback. Regards, Robert

Moving things forward!
by Lunar 20 Jan '14

20 Jan '14

Hi! Here's a couple of tasks you could pick if you wish to move things forward regarding Tor website: Create a sitemap for the current torproject.org website ------------------------------------------------------- It would be great to have a better idea of what the website already contains. An inventory of what is already there, which personas it would interest, what ought to be split, recycled or simply thrown away would be really useful to think about the organization of the new website. If you wonder where to put the result, it can be done directly on the relevant ticket: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/10591 or on a dedicated wiki page, waiting to existing: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/Website/OldSitemap Experiment using some static website generators ----------------------------------------------- The wiki page currently list three static website generators, namely Pelican, Jekyll and Middleman. https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/Website#Engine It would truly help if some folks could start experimenting with them so we get a better feeling of how much they could be fit for the Tor Project's website or not. As content, feel free to convert the some of the current WML website https://svn.torproject.org/svn/website/trunk or to use some of what ultrasandwidth has scrapped from blog.tpo: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/10479 Design a new navigation system ------------------------------ The navigation on the current Tor website has been said to be confusing. There is the top-level bar, then the strange “Download, Volunteer, Donate” buttons, and the second or third level navigation on the left… I think we could start brainstorming around some design drafts on how this could be made better. Even if it's not likely to be what we end up with, using the 2010 original sitemap is probably still relevant to think about how pages could be organized: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/raw-attachment/ticket/10591/tor-pr… These are only what I can come up with. If you have an idea of another concrete things that you thing could help moving us forward, please go ahead! (Thanks Rey for proof reading this mail.) -- Lunar <lunar(a)torproject.org>

[UI][Design] Must-Read For Anyone Working on Designing the Website
by William Papper 17 Jan '14

17 Jan '14

Hi all, Here's a report on the usability of the Tor Browser Bundle: https://iscproject.org/Tor_UX_Report_v1.1_05-06-13.pdf It covers the usability of the Tor website, and it is a very informative read for anyone working on UI design. Parts such as "The download process was cumbersome due to uncertainty around whether to select the 32 or 64 bit version" are helpful to keep in mind. I hope this link helps everyone. Will

Hi all I missed this list when it was created, even when it touches two of my main points of interest: a) improve the Tor web page b) translate it I'm the Tor Spanish Help Team, so I help users when they write in spanish to help(a)r.t.o and also help with software translations in Transifex. I'm proficent in websites programming and in translating po files. I also worked in the translation of GnuPG and Debian. Regards Noel Torres er Envite ------------------------- A: Because it breaks the logical flow of discussion. Q: Why is top posting bad?

Proposed personas
by Rey Dhuny 16 Jan '14

16 Jan '14

I've taken the liberty of sketching out some personas so we have somewhere to start from and build on: ``` ## Tony Johnson, Student, aged 21 Tony is a second year student at university who is studying international business. Tony has recently heard about Tor through recent mentions in the national news and would like to discover more about it Particularly he has heard from a friend that it could be used to protect his web browsing whilst using the university campus public wifi. ## Angela Thomas, Journalist, aged 39 Angela is a journalist who has been writing about online privacy for the past year and would like to write a feature about Tor. Although she has previously experimented with Tor's browser bundle she would like further information of how the Tor infrastructure functions and the technical details behind how it enables online anonymity. ## Stephanie Davis, Security Researcher, aged 28 Stephanie is a security researcher working for a think tank. She has been a user of Tor since December 2011 and is a strong proponent for an open web. Since finding out about Tor, Stephanie has become involved in the Tor community contributing fixes and features to the Tor code base and engaging with other Tor contributers using the mailing lists and IRC. ## Amrit Ghuna, Doctor, aged 58 Amrit is a Doctor of Pharmacy who has been practicing for 19 years. Although he now lives in suburbia outside the city, before he moved himself and his family to Sweden he suffered political oppression at the hands of the government, eventually being labeled a dissident. After seeing first hand the effects of a restricted and monitored internet he was enthused to read about Tor in the local newspaper and would very much like to make a donation to the Tor Project. ``` I've also added it to the wiki: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/Website#ProposedPersonas Thoughts welcome and requested! -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA512 Hi There, My name's Stuart and I would definitely like to to help out in any way I can. I have some experience with static blog generators, specifically Jekyll and Middleman, both of which I think would be excellent options for migrating the blog. I also have a weird fascination with writing documentation, I find it quite relaxing taking technical subjects and rendering them in easy to understand ways. I know, I am slightly freakish! I am also used to doing accessibility testing, I'm quadriplegic and have done lots of this type of testing for various websites and projects to ensure that disabled users will be able to mooch about the website like everybody else. :-) Excellent to meet you all Stuart. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iQJ8BAEBCgBmBQJSzTUjXxSAAAAAAC4AKGlzc3Vlci1mcHJAbm90YXRpb25zLm9w ZW5wZ3AuZmlmdGhob3JzZW1hbi5uZXQwRTFCNDJDNTJFNjgyQ0M0OUQ3MEQ0OTRB RTFEQ0IwMzZCN0RFMkZEAAoJEK4dywNrfeL9imsP/A4k4N2OXmtS7XV8ExeHduAU hc+3EQpuk7XOpGQUC8537wobbHrkjLPfNIHdLJjZqgxC8+7+eeOXAadF/xmq0BMM moM/qyhigYGVHXzJ/NLlBcoo6TPq3twCWhuPMECgpnl28fr0Gw3ZZHUDyt7sSYfu 91qpJg89TbDHSY4EFFsg/mdITZkvyWvrmuFkCD1bjkIJendVIO9nNvasYWl13QO8 D4ZSec28ehVGlVfzEcZnBjxZOwW+MZVDlvpI0ZRnZXYN0TyfGvw9U+iU+8/Zdlls EPkGDJJPmoVv26uMYyOptQ2qopXm2IE7UkF/L6VhgS53DXg6oZgx3ZgA+E+6REmc BHaP0v5zfV28KcfA5LTS5OZPIlbx0SWuAizxoeIFlgh8HnAyNFnExijKwOh5MriA EEa+GhQQCoXMM3fik9+tneXV9HZwbw+/f6GVaisHjdn6hRH8g4Bsijq+TOE7kzAr eXUNQFAv5YlbdlXauuniOmzifE4/D+bIdI/oImNki6G74Tvnnq8wqBnhzMsO+YPs WRczvA28J1p0VLUHbDZMJoEvFMiCw/6O6Xn9rGsZI95lwWk7Fcy+AZb2izMrb0TW 0i4uEsYORE32US13vYSGFRvdrJWuAPXjoQ6U50VFsTxDhtf9XVtVCO4MkensqvPf W6d97DLv/SzUe898AL+3 =HTSn -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Localization (passive vs active user interaction)
by Griffin Boyce 16 Jan '14

16 Jan '14

Hello all, I'd like to bring up localization. Right now, translation is done on Transifex and then just put into individual translated pages. The real downside with this is that it's not obvious to users who come to a given page, how to get to that page in their language (if it even exists). What would improve this process is using a passive localization script that detects the user's browser language (like l10n.js) and then swaps out chunks of content based on that. You can designate a fallback language. Considering translation is spotty for several key languages, I think that this approach is better than the current model. And because it's pulling in content from translation files, there's less html to maintain. Thoughts? ~Griffin [1] https://github.com/eligrey/l10n.js/

Query about milestones
by Rey Dhuny 11 Jan '14

11 Jan '14

Currently we have two milestones [1]: * Tor Website 3.0 Milestones [2] * Tor Blog Replacement [3] My query is why are these two separate milestones? I believe torproject.org 3.0's blog is simple another top level section of the website: `/blog` and isn't any different from another top level section. Eric Schaefer (`ultrasandwich` on IRC) has scraped the current weblog posts and can export these to markdown or $format when the time is required [4]. When torproject.org 3.0 is launched I can't see why the blog would be rolled out separately. I propose the two milestones be merged. Thoughts?
