Arm connection page shown as empty for one particular node

Hello, since updating my nodes to Tor 0.2.8.8, the "connections" page of Arm is not showing connections anymore for one exit node running on Gentoo Linux. On a Debian based exit node and on Gentoo based non-exit nodes things work as expected. The affected exit seems to work fine and bandwidth graphs look OK, only the connection list is unexpectedly shown as empty. I tried all listed "resolving utility" options, but that did not help. Any idea on how I might be able to debug/fix this? -Ralph

Arm phantom keystroke issue.

Hello. The node we run is in our library and we have a raspberry pi SSH'ed into the node and an LCD displaying the output from Arm. Arm is bugging out on a random basis and appears to be receiving a C keystroke that I believe is the clear log command. I ran the pi with no keyboard and I even used another machine to display the ARM output from the SSH session and it did the same thing. Has anyone else seen this and is there a solution? It's a real bummer because we use this as a learning tool in our library and the pretty graphs of incoming and outgoing traffic really get people interested. When this phantom keystroke happens the graphs stop and somebody has to press N on the keyboard to get the pretty graphs rolling again. This can happen in 2-3 hours or upto 12 hours. Why can't I see more traffic? (is my banana too weak?)

Hello, I have been running a middle relay for one year in a few days. I would expect the relay to push more traffic than it does. https://atlas.torproject.org/#details/875F74A3DC14737BECA06F8B500022154D1A2… What is the reason for it not handling more traffic? The Internet connection is 250 Mbit/s downstream and 100 Mbit/s upstream. There is nothing else using this connection. The "server" is a Banana Pro: http://www.lemaker.org/product-bananapro-specification.html The Banana is running Bananian Linux: https://www.bananian.org/ I know that the Banana Pro is not that powerful, but still I think that it is able to handle more traffic than it seems to do. According to top the CPU hovers around 10-20% most of the time. I have also been running nload and tload in order to see the load over a longer time. Does anyone have an idea of why I'm not seeing more traffic? Could it be that it is due to the quite slow hardware, even though I know that it is able to push more traffic? What kind of relay speeds can you expect from a Raspberry Pi for example? Thanks.

Node families and guard flags

When running two non-exit nodes, configured as a single family with no other members, and using identical bandwidth settings, is it to be expected that only one of the nodes ever obtains the guard flag? The node uptimes are pretty much the same as well, but consensus weight differs significantly. I don't really understand why that is, given what I read about node life cycles. -Ralph

Tor path selection upon failure

Hi Folks, There have been some technical reports about how to deal with the problem when a botnet uses Tor as its primary C&C channel. In this case, the CPU of some relays is exhausted, causing circuit creation failure. I am wondering currently how a client reacts when its circuit creation fails? Does the client simply resend another create cell or it will re-select new path instead? Thanks

Make sure you switched to EPEL's tor packages if you used torproject's RPM repository in the past. EPEL provides the latest tor version (currently 0.2.8.7 [2]), former torproject RPMs are no longer updated at all [1]. The migration to EPEL packages includes some manual steps, like filesystem permission fixing (EPEL uses another username for the tor system account). Weird traffic spikes?

Right now my relay is set at a maximum advertised bandwidth of 12MB/s, over time as the traffic has increased I've noticed that the traffic would increase a large amount and then my consensus weight would drop on its own over time, and then the traffic would drop drastically, is there any reason as to why it does this every once in a while? How to include files into torrc?

Hello, is it possible to include files into torrc? Something like this: # /etc/tor/torrc ORPort 443 # Policies are kept in separate file for readability Include /etc/tor/policies I checked https://www.torproject.org/docs/tor-manual.html.en but could not find anything. As an alternative, one can of course generate torrc from other files, but I'd rather use an include feature, if available. -Ralph

British Airways website blocking non exit relays IPs?

I haven't been able to access BA website from home for the last few weeks. I have failed to get any other answer on the phone that to try using Internet Explorer or to wait for things to maybe get fixed. Twitter support was not more helpful. experiences with debian tor 0.2.8.6 package from deb.torproject.org

Hi, I'm running a relay on debian jessie using packages from deb.torproject.org. I want to share the problems I had so others are aware of them when upgrading their relays. While upgrading from 0.2.7.6 to 0.2.8.6 via apt-get, I did a tail -f syslog to make sure I notice problems during the upgrade. (I expected a simple restart of all running tor instances) I use debian's multi instance systemd service file. When upgrading, all running tor instances are stopped (not restarted, as expected) syslog shows: Interrupt: we have stopped accepting new connections, and will shut down in 30 seconds. Interrupt again to exit now. Clean shutdown finished. Exiting. (problem is reproducible) Side note (unrelated to the upgrade but also relevant for the debian tor package from deb.torproject.org repo): Stopping the default instance stops all instances due to /lib/systemd/system/tor@.service: [...] PartOf=tor.service ReloadPropagatedFrom=tor.service How about using the same way as the RPM maintainer does - so one can enable the default instance without affecting all others? PartOf=tor-master.service ReloadPropagatedFrom=tor-master.service

Which OS gives usually the best performance for a relay?

Hello, I am thinking of setting up a new relay. I know that the hardware in the server is going to be the bottleneck, not my Internet connection. I have a problem deciding on which OS to use for the relay. A few years ago when I had a similar relay going, I had it running on OpenBSD first. Then I changed the OS to FreeBSD and the performance got about 20% better. I have no idea if this would be the case today too. So I think that maybe it's either FreeBSD or Debian that would be "best", but I have nothing concrete to base that decision on unless I try them both. I am going to use a Via C7 board in this specific case. So I suspect that it's the maturity of the VIA drivers in the OS that is going to make the difference. Still I would like to know how to think in similar situations in the future even for other hardware. Has anyone any concrete experience of the tor relay speeds on different operating systems? I don't want to start a flame war of religious beliefs, but I suspect that OSes differ in how optimized they are for different tasks. Thankful for any constructive input on this. Regards, Farid

write-history for exit relays only?

I want to learn how many bytes exit relays forwarded. I assume that the write-history that is published in a relay's extra-info document includes bytes that were relayed as part of the exit's guard and middle role? If so, is there a way to learn how many bytes were written by the relay in its exit role only? I suspect that one could approximate this number by accounting for the probability of all exits being selected as guard, middle, and exit, but I would prefer a simpler and more reliable approach.

Tor bridge and obfs4proxy

I need someone's bridge experience. I had an HD crash and lost one of my Tor bridges. So, I'm rebuilding on a leased VPS. First I tried with Debian 8 and then with ubuntu 16.04 when Debian didn't work. With both operating systems I get a warning message when I start Tor. Tor is the latest version as is obfs4proxy: Sep 04 13:39:41.641 [warn] Strange ServerTransportPlugin type 'obfs4' Sep 04 13:39:41.641 [warn] Failed to parse/validate config: Invalid server transport line. See logs for details. There are no log entries. Apparently Tor starts without the proxy. I have configured torrc as follows: ServerTransportPlugin obfs3 obfs4 exec /usr/bin/obfs4proxy ExtORPort auto /usr/bin/ does contain the obfs4proxy file. Does anyone know my problem? Is there a 'tell-all' explanation of obfs4proxy? Thanks, Arisbe

Useful metrics for relay operators

Hello all, After Roger's recent checkin emails to this list, some of the folks from the community and metrics teams have started to brainstorm ways that we could use Onionoo data [1] to give better support and recognition to the relay operators. For example, a weekly mail of all the relays that just passed the "earned a tshirt" threshold, or some other threshold about how much bandwidth they've pushed over a period of time. The community team would then contact the operator(s) and congratulate them, thank them for their service, see if we can offer them help in any other ways, and so forth. I'd like to hear directly from relay operators about what kinds of metrics they might like to see involved in a project like this. Have you achieved milestones with your relays that you wished Tor Project would have given you some recognition for? Have there been specific times you'd wished for a checkin email, like the one Roger sent (eg 3 months after starting a new relay)? Anything else that you think Onionoo could measure that would be valuable for you as an operator? Thank you so much for running relays! Looking forward to hearing from you. Looking at the advertised bandwidth vs bandwidth history from Tor Metrics[1], it appears that guard relays see much more traffic than exit relays. I think it might be partially because guard-only, guard-middle and guard-exits aren't separated, but would it really skew the numbers that much? total relay bandwidth

Hi, (rather new relay operator here, so excuse me, if this is a dumb question) I just saw this (https://metrics.torproject.org/bandwidth.html) graph, which shows that the advertised relay bandwidth in the whole network is more than double the actually used bandwidth. While it's certainly nice to have a bit of breathing space to absorb load spikes, I'm wondering, if new relays (i.e. non-exits) are actually helpful at this point, or if they simply don't make a difference. I am running an rpi3 with devuan. How to I get a more recent tor package on there? Could I use https://deb.torproject.org or do I have to setup a tool chain for armhf and build it from source? /scooby

Wrong mode on /var/run/tor

Hello, I just had a tor instance exit with these error messages: [warn] Failed to parse/validate config: Failed to bind one of the listener ports. [err] Reading config failed--see warnings above. For usage, try -h. [warn] Restart failed (config error?). Exiting. Above that, the log contains an endless stream of these errors: [warn] Permissions on directory /var/run/tor are too permissive. [warn] Before Tor can create a control socket in "/var/run/tor/control", the directory "/var/run/tor" needs to exist, and to be accessible only by the user and group account that is running Tor. (On some Unix systems, anybody who can list a socket can connect to it, so Tor is being careful.) When I checked, the /var/run/tor directory had the mode "rwxr-sr-x". After removing the permissions for "other", tor started without problems. Did anyone else see this? I'm using Ubuntu packages from the deb.torproject.org repository. Ubuntu has been working on a new kind of software package* that aims for isolation from the rest of the system, so 1) anyone can create packages for others without review, 2) security is better, and 3) it can be the basis for lots of supposedly single-purpose systems like cars, watches, home security systems, etc. The packages work for desktop and server too. The upshot is that soon, they hope, many devices will run the miniature Ubuntu plus the single package that makes the device do what it does to act like that device. If the mfr doesn't restrict it, we users can add other things that they never intended to make our device do more. Your Wifi Router could also be your print server. Why not? I made a tor-middle-relay package, so the TVs, Wifi Routers, Toasters, Self-driving Cars, Phones... of the world that are running that new kind of Ubuntu (or other OS that implements this package system!) can also help the Tor network. The code that enables that new package system is already in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, so even existing desktops and servers can already use it. So, if you use Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, this should get you a Tor relay $ sudo apt install snapd $ sudo snap install tor-middle-relay (The ARMHF architecture has an open bug where the new package security rejects the "personality" syscall that Tor calls, so ARMHF doesn't work out of the box right now.) Once you have it installed, try $ sudo /snap/bin/tor-middle-relay.configure to bump up your bandwidth limit over the conservative defaults. Having run a relay on an older RPi with standard Raspbian, I would caution you to look carefully at the packages you're using, if you choose that hardware. Of course the Tor package itself is woefully out of date, so you have to build from source. But it's worse than that. I noticed that running regular apt-get update && apt-get upgrade was not enough to keep openssl up to date. Over a year after Heartbleed had been fixed, I noticed that my "up-to-date" version was still vulnerable, not to mention all the other bugs discovered there in the last few years. I thought maybe I could replace openssl with one of the forks, but was unable to find any pre-built packages or even signed source distributions with signing keys distributed over TLS. It was a pretty bad state of affairs, so I shut that relay down entirely. Maybe it has improved since then, but be careful. Closing a relay, to move/upgrade, identity question ?

Hey, Planning to close, then re-build a relay. (1st time I'm testing it on the whole system!) Some useful informations here about : https://www.torproject.org/docs/faq.html.en#UpgradeOrMove I think it's useful to stay on the same "identity"... But if the new torrc will use others TCP ports, will it be a mess ? No problem for me if this (new) relay will not have the same identity has before. But it will be nice to retore Atlas old graphs ;) If I'm paranoiac, and if this current relay has been corrupted, I think it's better to start a clean identity without the old keys ? Cheapest HW to get 20Mbit?

Hi Since a few months back I have two RPi running Tor relays and delivering about 1Mbit each of peak throughput. Now my ISP has increased my max upload speed and I am looking to contribute more, somewhere in the 20Mbit range or possibly more. But what hardware do I need? Has anyone written down a list of minimum requirements to get a certain throughout? I have tried to google, but failed. Sincerely Daniel Armyr.
