New OONI report on throttling of social media in Turkiye

Hi friends, Based on OONI data, we published a *new report analyzing the throttling of social media and instant messaging apps* (Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok, and Signal) in *Türkiye during protests* earlier this year. Read our report here: https://ooni.org/post/2025-turkiye-throttling-social-media/ Our analysis of OONI data from Türkiye indicates that access to Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok, and Signal was throttled, whereas access to Telegram was blocked. Additionally, YouTube was blocked via DNS on TurkNet (AS12735). These censorship events were primarily observed on the TTNET (AS47331) and Turkcell Superonline (AS34984) networks, occurring on 19th and 20th March 2025 (coinciding with the onset of protests) and on 8th September 2025 (following clashes between police and opposition supporters). New OONI Report_ Information Controls in India and Pakistan During the May 2025 Conflict

I am happy to share that today we published a new report in collaboration with Digital Rights Foundation (https://digitalrightsfoundation.pk/) This report documents the blocking of news media websites and reports of takedown requests on social media platforms (X, YouTube, Instagram) in India and Pakistan during the 4-day armed conflict that happened in May 2025. Join us at the *Open Measurement Gathering (OMG) Village:* a community space dedicated to internet measurement, co-hosted by M-Lab, OONI, IODA, and Censored Planet! * *Where?* Booth 17 at the Global Gathering venue in Estoril, Portugal * *When?* September 8-10, between 1:00 PM to 5:30 PM daily At the OMG Village, we'll have booths and facilitate sessions on topics related to censorship measurement. To collect OONI swag (stickers, t-shirts, etc), come to the *OONI booth on Day 1* between *1:00 PM to 3:00 PM*. We’ll bring a limited number of OONI t-shirts, so first come, first served! :) On Day 3, the OMG Village will host community-led circle sessions proposed by participants throughout the event. [New report] Internet Shutdowns During Bangladesh’s 2024 Uprising

Hi friends, In collaboration with our partner, Digitally Right ( https://digitallyright.org/) we recently co-published a new research report titled "*The Longest Silence: Internet Shutdowns During Bangladesh’s 2024 Uprising*". The report has been published on each of our websites: * OONI: https://ooni.org/post/2025-bangladesh-report/ * Digitally Right: https://digitallyright.org/internet-shutdowns-of-bangladeshs-2024-uprising/ This study provides a *timeline of the political context and internet shutdowns (blocks and outages) during the uprising in Bangladesh* in the summer of 2024. To document the internet disruptions, we share OONI data, as well as findings from other relevant datasets (such as IODA and Cloudflare Radar). At the peak of the protests, multiple datasets (IODA, Cloudflare Radar, Google traffic data, and even OONI data!) show that Bangladesh experienced a complete, nationwide internet blackout between 18th to 23rd July 2024 ( https://ooni.org/post/2025-bangladesh-report/#b-july-1823-nationwide-blacko… ). Once internet access was restored, OONI data shows the blocking of numerous social media platforms and instant messaging apps between 24th to 31st July 2024 ( https://ooni.org/post/2025-bangladesh-report/#c-july-2431-eased-curfew-laye… ). Overall, these patterns of internet access control reflect strategies commonly employed by governments worldwide during periods of political unrest ( https://ooni.org/documents/2022-ooni-submission-ohchr-report-internet-shutd… ).
