[Reports] New blocks in Guinea and Saudi Arabia
by Maria Xynou 30 Jul '26

30 Jul '26

Hello friends, OONI published two short reports documenting new blocks that emerged over the last few days: * *Guinea blocked Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube:* https://explorer.ooni.org/findings/106140107100 * *Saudi Arabia just blocked Tinder*: https://explorer.ooni.org/findings/305408501600 On 27th July 2026, Guinea started blocking access to social media… again. OONI data shows the blocking of Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube on Orange Guinée (AS37461) by means of TLS interference. Amid ongoing political instability, this follows previous social media blocks in May 2023 and November 2023. Yesterday, Saudi Arabia started blocking access to Tinder. OONI data shows that Tinder is blocked on Mobily (AS35819) by means of TLS interference. We were alerted of this block through our new Censorship Alert System, an internal prototype that we're currently testing and hope to publicly release over the next year. We thank OONI Probe users for contributing measurements! All the best, Maria.

quota exceeded/429 Why? | Feature Request to improve error message
by Marek Küthe 28 Jul '26

28 Jul '26

Hello, I'm a participant in dn42, an overlay network that experiments with Internet technologies such as BGP, OSPF, Babel, WireGuard, IPsec, and more. A while back, I added dn42.dev (one of the mirrors of the dn42 wiki) to OONI Probe. According to [1], Iran and Poland are blocking this site. I wanted to look at the specific measurements for Poland [2], but was unable to do so. Server Response { "name": "AxiosError", "message": "Network Error", "baseURL": "https://api.ooni.org", "url": "/api/v1/measurements", "params": { "probe_cc": "PL", "domain": "dn42.dev", "test_name": "web_connectivity", "since": "2026-01-01", "until": "2026-06-01", "failure": null, "limit": 50, "anomaly": true, "order": "desc" } } AxiosError: Network Error at push.m.onerror (https://explorer.ooni.org/_next/static/chunks/2s_s1862pp545.js:2:49148) at XMLHttpRequest.n (https://explorer.ooni.org/_next/static/chunks/0e1nv2rrn7z4k.js:3:4819) at tg.request (https://explorer.ooni.org/_next/static/chunks/2s_s1862pp545.js:2:60687) at async B (https://explorer.ooni.org/_next/static/chunks/1is9y5_ohz9-7.js:2:27311) at async https://explorer.ooni.org/_next/static/chunks/2s_s1862pp545.js:2:75957 When I check the developer console, I see that the request to https://api.ooni.org/api/v1/measurements?probe_cc=PL&domain=dn42.dev&test_n… until=2026-06-01&limit=50&anomaly=true&order=desc results in a 429 error (although this isn't visible in the screenshot). The API itself appears to return the error message "quota exceeded". There's no sign of that in the screenshot either. 1. Why am I already hitting the limit after just a few requests? 2. I have the following suggestion for the Explorer itself: Include the API error message - such as "quota exceeded" or 429 directly in the error message instead of just "meaningless" (-> AxiosError Network Error) JSON data. Best regards, Marek Küthe [1] https://explorer.ooni.org/domain/dn42.dev?since=2026-01-01&until=2026-07-29… [2] https://explorer.ooni.org/search?since=2026-01-01&until=2026-06-01&probe_cc… -- Marek Küthe m.k(a)mk16.de er/ihm he/him

[Report] Italy Blocks Reproductive Health Websites
by Maria Xynou 28 Jul '26

28 Jul '26

Hi friends, Today, OONI and Women on Web (WoW) co-published a new research report, documenting the *blocking of Women on Web (WoW) and Women Help Women (WHW) reproductive health websites in Italy* based on OONI data. Read our *report* here: https://ooni.org/post/2026-italy-blocks-wow-and-whw/ Learn about the *impact of these blocks* through the joint press release by WoW and WHW: https://www.womenonweb.org/en/news/italy-is-blocking-access-to-abortion-inf… Starting in mid-February 2026, at least 6 ISPs in Italy – including several of Italy’s largest networks by end-user population – started blocking access to the Women on Web (WoW) and Women Help Women (WHW) reproductive health websites through DNS tampering. OONI data shows multiple forms of DNS interference, including bogon IP responses, NXDOMAIN errors, and DNS responses directing users to block pages. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), access to accurate health information is a key component of enabling individuals to understand their healthcare options, make informed decisions, and safely navigate reproductive healthcare. Restricting access to such information may therefore undermine people's ability to obtain timely and safe care and, ultimately, to effectively exercise their reproductive rights. We thank OONI Probe users in Italy for contributing measurements. ~ OONI.

New OONI pages: Citations & Community Resources
by Maria Xynou 09 Jul '26

09 Jul '26

Hello friends, We're excited to share that we have published 3 new pages on the OONI website: 1) *Get Involved*: https://ooni.org/get-involved/ 2) *OONI Resources*: https://ooni.org/support/resources/ 3) *OONI Citations & Press*: https://ooni.org/about/citations/ We revamped our "Get Involved" page to improve the discoverability of OONI community resources and information (addressing community feedback that it was previously hard to discover them). The "Get involved" page features OONI training materials, resources for outreach, documentation for using OONI data as part of research, information on how to join the localization community, and more! To enable you to find quick links with OONI information, we published a new "OONI Resources" page which not only provides links to all the OONI information you may need, but which also includes other resources at the end of the page which you may find useful! Wondering how researchers, journalists, and human rights advocates use OONI data? Our new “Citations & Press” page highlights OONI’s coverage in the press, as well as OONI citations in research and advocacy publications since 2012 (at least the ones we were able to track). We hope this helps inspire more efforts that make use of OONI data! Thank you for using OONI data and for being involved in the community. We couldn't do this work without you! Warmly, Maria.

Assessing OONI's Anonymous Credential System
by Maria Xynou 06 Jul '26

06 Jul '26

Hello friends, Earlier this year, we announced the *new OONI Anonymous Credential System* to cryptographically protect the OONI dataset from the (intentional or unintentional) submission of faulty measurements, and to strengthen trust in OONI data. Today, we published a new blog post which shares: * *New heuristics and strategies* for mitigating faulty measurements * An *evaluation of the effectiveness* of our new Anonymous Credential System *Read our blog post here*: https://ooni.org/post/2026-faulty-measurements/ You can also learn more about the OONI Anonymous Credential System through our previous blog posts: * Announcing OONI's New Anonymous Credential System: https://ooni.org/post/2025-announcing-ooni-new-anonymous-credential-system/ * Requirements for OONI’s Anonymous Credentials System: https://ooni.org/post/2025-requirements-for-oonis-anonymous-credentials/ * Probe Security Without Identification: https://ooni.org/post/2025-probe-security-without-identification/ We thank Michele Orrù, a talented cryptographer and expert in digital signatures and zero-knowledge proofs who worked with us on designing and implementing anonymous credentials within OONI Probe. We also thank the OTF for supporting this work. ~ OONI.
