A bit more evidence on circuit creation storms

Again, a Pi-specific note - on 0.2.3.x, the Pi would have crashed or Tor been killed before this number ever reached five digits, so 0.2.4.x is better! I has a metric! I still don't know how in the Tor protocol a circuit creation request is made, but maybe it was them gobbling bandwidth. Probably not, though? There was an increase in average TX/RX bandwidth during this incident, but not to levels that are in any way out of the ordinary for how I use my Internet connection. Is it DNS requests? Is it TCP connection state entries? It's not bandwidth, we observed that above, and my router can handle far faster pipes than the one it's on currently. The DNS failing is a sign that the router is under severe stress. Back in the 0.2.3.x days, I often had to reboot the *router* after one of these storms, not just the Tor relay. And again - do we really know what is causing this? Something seems seriously wrong with the kind of numbers I'm seeing coming in to a node with MaxAdvertisedBandwidth 250KB. I think a bug should be opened about this, if there isn't one already. Ich checked both of my Exit nodes: IP Address 91.219.238.107 is listed in the CBL. It appears to be infected with a spam sending trojan, proxy or some other form of botnet. <- uptime ~16 days IP Address 84.201.38.234 is not listed in the CBL. <-- New node, uptime < 24hrs > This was detected by observing this IP attempting to make contact to a > s_patcher Command and Control server, with contents unique to s_patcher C&C > command protocols. I feel like you are SO missing the point. Making Tor block morally horrible things does not involve telling exit notes to block traffic to known porn sites. The porn sites with the boobies that someone might hit on port 80 on the public internet represent the Catholic Church of porn, metaphorically-speaking. The truly terrible stuff is hidden to where you as an exit node operator would never be able to simply block it by IP address or domain name. It seems clear that it would require designing into Tor the ability to inspect the content of its packets in the unencrypted form, plus be able to be configured to identify and reject files with certain identifiable signatures. This capability would have to be implemented in all nodes, in order to detect the reject-files should they come from the .onion sites. That kind of capability would damage Tor's anonymity at the technical level (</understate>). If someone believes that making a G-rated Tor is a good idea, they must not be considering the wisdom behind why it was designed the way it was, with each node not knowing the nature of the data it passes. The same technical characteristics which protect the investigators and whistleblowers and "rights of humanity" will also by their nature protect the boobie-watchers. Think about this, understand this. It is not about the concept of anonymity and privacy, it's about the technical requirements necessary to provide it in the face of the hostile environment we have now. That tool is claiming this about our relay: "This IP is infected with, or is NATting for a machine infected with s_ddos_dirtjumper". Says the problem connection was an attempt to connect to port 80 on a "s_ddos_dirtjumper Command and Control server with contents unique to s_ddos_dirtjumper". Behavior last seen 14 hours ago. Read a little about it - wondering if it requires a malicious Tor user to cause a machine to make this kind of traffic flow through Tor, or if an infected victim using Tor would be enough. Seems exit node operators may be able to stop this particular thing if they knew the IP addresses of the described botnet "Command and Control Domains". One could drop that traffic outbound by IP. The abuseat.org site only seems to know its honeypot/sinkhole address though and that's not the one to block. I have been running a Tor exit node for only 2 days on a fresh IP address. However, that IP address is now blocked by spamhaus because it apparently tried to contact the Command and Control server of the "pony" malware: http://cbl.abuseat.org/lookup.cgi?ip=5.79.81.200 Other node operators, could you please try your IP address? Perhaps this could explain the recent increase in connections?

....................by virusessince starting relay. I run several anti viral and malware routines daily and ever since deciding to start relaying, they are all being stretched to their capacity. Let me know when the sys is cleaned up. Maybe include an anti viral with the relay setup and update it thru the software. Make it so no one can connect to Tor unless they are certified clean.

Possible rootkit: zaRwT.KiT Use the 'lsof -i' or 'netstat -an' command to check this." I guess this is a false positive in conjucntion to the massive raid of traffic increase in the past 3 weeks, were Tor opens these Ports to manage the massive circuit building requests. I didn't find anything suspiciouson this relay. -- We don't bubble you, we don't spoof you ;) Keep your data encrypted! It seems clear that there are important reasons Tor could never begin examining/taking direct responsibility for/filtering the content that flows through it (as opposed with disallowing specific ports, which is different). Overload data for Exit vs Non-Exit (and Guard vs Middle)?

To try to get to the bottom of the recent influx of clients to the Tor network, it might be useful to compare load characteristics since 8/19 for nodes with different types of flags. People with Munin setups: it would be especially useful if you could post links/graph images for connection counts, bandwidth, and CPU load since 8/19. I'm particularly interested if people with just the Exit flag (w/o Guard) are seeing increased connection counts that aren't explained by uptime or ramp-up. So far the only datapoint I have for this is https://www.torservers.net/munin/torservers.net/psilotorlu.torservers.net/i… but it looks like that node just rebooted and possibly rekeyed, so it's connection increase could just be due to that. It would also be interesting to see if Guard+Exits are seeing a greater increase in connection counts than just Guards. I'm also wondering if any aspects of the load has any other relation to node flags. -- Mike Perry

Hello all, I just spun up 2 relays (1 exit, 1 non-exit) in Amsterdam using DigitalOcean as the VPS provider. It's been up for about 8 hours now. How to reset AccountingMax stats?

My relay has become convinced that it has reached its AccountingMax limit, though actually only 71% of it (according to my ISP) has been used. How can I reset the stats so that this miscalculation is not used for future configuration of expected network traffic? Yes, I know I can just erase /var/lib/tor, but that means starting from a new identity. I'm hoping that I can edit the state file to clear the stats. Advice? Thanks.

I added a second core to my server and it's still getting "Your computer is too slow..." error messages. Top shows cpu for the Tor process hanging around 60-75%, which is where it was before. Top's system total is hanging around "Cpu(s) 25.9%". That plus the VM manager's graph suggest that the server's not doing much with the second core. Also see a repeat of the odd log message with the 154.x net address someone else described with the huge hexidecimal string (40 hex chars, + sign, 40 more, on and on). I'm currently seeing more than a doubling of connections (from a mean of c. 2000 established connections to just over 5000) on my relay at 0xbaddad. The log is full of the (expected) messages: "Your computer is too slow to handle this many circuit creation requests!" I guess this is related to the massive jump in connected clients in the past few days and I assume that everyone else is seeing something similar. Our relay is a few weeks old and I think it is still in the process of ramping up its utilization to its configured max. Because of that, I find it hard to judge what may be excessive on it. The last log on our server had it at 13,110 circuits open. Yesterday it hit 10,000 once but seemed to be more hanging around 8,000. The server's CPU is around 75% utilization. I don't see any error messages in the logs indicating inability to accommodate circuit requests. Traffic is higher today than yesterday but looking at it in the context of the past week and the steady increase, it's not way out of line. Only odd thing I saw this in the logs was this. I've put in XXXXXXXX to cover the IP address, as I don't know what the log is about. "Aug 30 12:07:02.000 [warn] Received http status code 504 ("Gateway Time-out") from server 'XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:80' while fetching " And then there is a very long string designating a path which starts with "/tor/server" and then has a whole bunch of 40-digit hexadecimal numbers separated with + signs, and then the whole thing ends with a single ".z". Rebooted Relay, Got a Warning

I just rebooted my relay after reducing the RelayBandwidthRate and RelayBandwidthBurst parameters. Upon checking the log-file, I see the following messages: Aug 25 13:40:00.000 [notice] Bootstrapped 90%: Establishing a Tor circuit. Aug 25 13:40:05.000 [warn] Problem bootstrapping. Stuck at 90%: Establishing a Tor circuit. (Connection refused; CONNECTREFUSED; count 10; recommendation warn) Aug 25 13:40:05.000 [warn] 9 connections have failed: Aug 25 13:40:05.000 [warn] 9 connections died in state connect()ing with SSL state (No SSL object) Aug 25 13:40:05.000 [notice] Tor has successfully opened a circuit. Looks like client functionality is working. That's a new message to me, is there any reason to be concerned? It obviously eventually managed to establish a circuit, but it still has me slightly concerned.
