Testing HTTPS URLs and certificate chain

It would be good to have ongoing tests for the domains we use as fronts for anticensorship, e.g.: https://www.google.com/ https://a0.awsstatic.com/ https://ajax.aspnetcdn.com/ I would love to have periodic checks that 1) each domain is accessible, and 2) the certificate chain is what we expect, to find MITM attempts. I suppose the existing nettests/blocking/http_requests.py can handle simple HTTPS connectivity. Is it easy to add the URLs above to the standard tests? I'm less sure about how to get the certificate chain. I did some searching and didn't find a way to get the certificate chain from the twisted.web.client.Agent that templates/httpt.py uses (maybe you provide it a twisted.internet.ssl.ContextFactory somehow?). nettests/experimental/tls_handshake.py doesn't seem to be quite what I want. What do you suggest?

Mining OONI reports to find server-side Tor blocking (e.g. CloudFlare captchas)

I want to search OONI reports for cases of Tor exits being blocked by the server (things like the CloudFlare 403 captcha). The http_requests test is great for that because it fetches a bunch of web pages with Tor and without. The attached script is my first-draft attempt at finding block pages. Its output is at the end of this message. You can see it finds a lot of CloudFlare captchas and other blocks. First, I ran ooniprobe to get a report-http_requests.yamloo file. Then I ran the script, which does this: Skip the first YAML document, because it's a header. For all other documents: Skip it if it has non-None control_failure or experiment_failure--there are a few of these. Look for exactly two non-failed requests, one with is_tor:false and one with is_tor:true. Skip it if it lacks these. Classify the blocked status of the is_tor:false and is_tor:true responses. 400-series and 500-series status codes are classified as blocked and all others are unblocked. Print an output line if the blocked status of is_tor:false does not match the blocked status of is_tor:true. I have a few questions. Is this a reasonable way to process reports? Is there a more standard way to do e.g. YAMLOO processing? I know there are many reports at https://ooni.torproject.org/reports/. Is that all of them? I think I heard from Arturo that some reports are not online because of storage issues. What's the best way for me to get the reports for processing? Just download all *http_requests* files from the web server? Here is the output of the script. 403-CLOUDFLARE is the famous "Attention Required!" captcha page. I investigated some of the others manually and they are mostly custom block pages or generic web server 403s. (There are also a couple of CloudFlare pages that have a different form.) Overall, almost 4% of the 1000 URLs scanned by ooniprobe served a block page over Tor. I'm not sure what's up with the non-Tor 503s from Amazon. They just look like localized internal service error pages ("ist ein technischer Fehler aufgetreten", "une erreur de système interne a été décelée"). Summary of ooni-pipeline-ng AWS costs 2015-06

Following the example led by David Fifield in publishing the meek transport cloud service costs here is the summary of costs we incurred for running the ooni-pipeline-ng up until now. It’s also worth pointing out that in May 2015 the cost would have been much higher, since in testing the deployment of the pipeline we left some machines running for too long by mistake, but luckily Amazon was kind enough to give us $650.00 in credit for unexpected usage. The projection of costs for June is to be at around $330.00. ~ Arturo

OONI team status report for May 2015

# What we did in May 2015 * Attended an event at Stony Brook about network measurement and met up with various internet censorship researchers * Worked on GUI for network measurement instruments called NetworkMeter: https://github.com/TheTorProject/network-meter * Produce some statistics on current OONI user base. The jist of it is that we estimate to have at least 221 users (these are the unique ASNs we count in the reports, so it could as well be more). In recent times (the last couple of months) we have reports coming in from at least 10 different users on a weekly basis. Given the fact that since 2 months some of our personal probing machines have gone offline this is even more surprising. * We automatized the building of libight libraries in the Xcode app * The first iteration of the new data pipeline was almost completed and web based API interface started to be developed.
