Hello, I was wondering if it's possible to allocate 1 Gbps of bandwidth to my Tor relay, or if it would be better to create multiple instances on the same server? I have a dedicated server in a data center. When I look at the list of the fastest relays, I see that some manage to reach 1 Gbps on a single instance, but I assume that requires a very powerful CPU and a very high single-core clock speed, given that my CPU is a bit old. If you're in Europe, it's possible with one relay. If you're outside Europe, it'll usually take more than one relay. Give the relay at least a few weeks to get consensus weight allocated. Unfortunately, Tor's bandwidth authorities (the servers that measure the bandwidth of relays) are heavily concentrated in Europe, so even high- capacity relays will be falsely given a lower consensus weight. We're talking the difference between <1 Mbps with 1% CPU usage (Malaysia) and ~400 Mbps with 100% CPU usage (Germany), despite both being able to push 1 Gbps traffic in general. Yet the former is not bottlenecked by any resources (it still has plenty of CPU and bandwidth to spare). It's sad because there are too many relays concentrated in Germany and the Netherlands, but other locations, even with spare capacity, don't get fully utilized. The advice is always the same: run more Tor processes, but that's not practical for many people due to the limit of 8 relays per IP and the fact that many low-cost VPSes don't have enough RAM to run more than a single Tor relay anyway. Hopefully in the future, bandwidth measurements will be fixed. But until then, they are badly broken and heavily prioritize relays in already- saturated areas while penalizing capable and diverse relays. If your VPS has good connectivity to the EU or eastern United States, it will probably get good usage. That means that you need really premium routing to get any decent bandwidth in APAC, for example.
