 I believe that this specific bug is working and can be closed.

 Sadly, some people have used this bug as a catch-all bug for "something
 screwy happened with bufferevents enabled" ; I am not sure that every
 issue mentioned here is currently solved.  We should do a once-over to
 make sure that every new issue brought up in the comments is either fixed
 or has a ticket, and then close this.
