It has been a good run, hasn't it?

I am sorry to say that after more than 9 years of continuous service, Tor node 0C3D5E19E3C75B505C8ACD26F89DCA2DF970553E is scheduled to cease operations on 2025-09-30. It has certainly been a good run and I am unhappy to see HORUS1 go dark, but the costs for the dedicated machine can no longer be justified. There were recurring abuse complaints forwared to me, by people who don't understand that a non-exit Tor node poses no threat and even due to IP packet spoofing, but that's something I was (and am) willing to deal with. Alas, money is tight. -Ralph

I have received off-list reminders that using a VPS instead of a dedicated server is an option. Thank you, I am aware of that. The thing is that I have not (yet?) found a hosting provider with a viable offer in terms of network traffic cost. Using a dedicated server with a flat fee was cheaper for me than any VPS with metered traffic, based on the volume of data node HORUS1 has been moving. I could limit the bandwidth for Tor, but that is not an attractive option. If one deals with abuse complaints anyway, it feels more worthwhile doing it for a high volume node. -Ralph

You can try hostglobal.plus, they offer unlimited VPS for some euros per months, public IPv4 and IPv6 included. They also don't seem to cut off customers because of their traffic. -- Gruß Marco Send unsolicited bulk mail to 1758638236muell@cartoonies.org

Hi, Ralph. Are you in the US? You might want to take a look into DartNode (dartnode[dot]com) On Tue, Sep 23, 2025 at 12:20 PM Ralph Seichter via tor-relays < tor-relays@lists.torproject.org> wrote:

Thank you for helping us all! :) In particular while facing all the hostility from ignorant people. Best wishes.

I appreciate the sentiment. Also, I don't want to give up on a worthwhile cause like Tor altogether. As a fellow operator wrote, nodes limited to lower traffic volume are also useful. I'll have see what is still possible with a reduced budget. -Ralph
