Hello, from time to time, arm looks like below: https://smichel.ocloud.de/index.php/s/q2knnq3AD67rPjK But with a simple keystroke (arrow) it runs again. After a few days it seems to crash completely: https://smichel.ocloud.de/index.php/s/GjwdCLebR4iDkuv I dont't know then, if the relay is still working. Last time this happend, I simply startet arm again and it worked. But thiis way I will never reach the guard-flag :) Yours SMichel Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com) Secure Email.

Arm just doesn't work anymore. Use nyx instead. On Tue, Mar 20, 2018 at 2:32 PM smichel0 <smichel0@protonmail.com> wrote:

If I pick my flavor (Debian/Ubuntu), what about all the dependig things (python3, python3-stem, then the ones who depend to these e.g. [libpython3-stdlib](https://packages.debian.org/sid/libpython3-stdlib) and so on). Do I have to install all these bundles too? As I said: sudo apt-get install nyx doesn't work. Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com) Secure Email. ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ Original Message ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ Am 20. I used a fresh install of Ubuntu Xenial 16.04 LTS. Other than the official instructions at https://www.torproject.org/docs/debian.html.en I didn't mess with /etc/apt/sources.list. Also other than enabling the control port, control cookie and log I used the default torrc. Necessary commands (answer yes to the prompts): sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo apt-get install python-setuptools sudo easy_install pip sudo pip install nyx To run its the same as arm, for example: sudo -u debian-tor nyx Hope that helps. Gary

Many thanks, nyx seems to work. I'm a bit of a noob with this things, but I want to participate in the tor-network. Two questions left: The bandwith usage has an average of about 70 kb/s, it's a bit low I suppose. And: While installing nyx there was the following error: The directory /home/*/.cache/pip/http or its parent directory is not owned by the current user and the cache has been disabled... The same with /home/*/.cache/pip. Should I worry about this? Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com) Secure Email. ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ Original Message ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ Am 21. Hi, smichel0:
This morning nyx was still working but tor was down - now restarting.
The Tor daemon (instance) is unrelated to nyx, arm or other software that monitors your Tor relay. In order to verify if the Tor daemon is running on your system you should check the logs usually under '/var/log/syslog'.
Whow can I get rid of the arm-installation?
From your previous post it seems that you are running a system with the apt manager, the following command will remove arm from your system (given that you have installed arm via the package manager): apt-get remove tor-arm ~Vasilis -- Fingerprint: 8FD5 CF5F 39FC 03EB B382 7470 5FBF 70B1 D126 0162 Pubkey: https://pgp.mit.edu/pks/lookup?op=get&search=0x5FBF70B1D1260162

OK, thanks, I think that worked. Nyx is running and tor-arm is uninstalled. And: Yes there is a log which I enclosed to this message. I not able to see anything helpful in it. Tor has now a uptime of about 22 hrs, it ran with an up-/download-average of about 47 KB/sec which is really low. Now there is no up- or download at all. Hello. It is good you got it working, On 23 March 2018 at 05:04, smichel0 <smichel0@protonmail.com> wrote:
If it is a new relay it takes at least a week for for the usage to go up, as documented here https://blog.torproject.org/lifecycle-new-relay You can speedtest your relay to make sure if is working, it uses the command line version of www.speedtest.net. **Don't do this often so not to put any strain on the network!!!** Do this in one terminal with nyx open in another. For extra fun also have top/htop open and see the CPU increase during the test. sudo apt-get install speedtest-cli torsocks --shell speedtest-cli exit Note the use of exit using torsocks. About the /home/cache/pip errors. I am sorry, I am not an expert in python / pip, if pip's cache is disabled I guess it means next time you install a python program from pip it will be slow. Thanks.

Yes, thank you. Nyx is running, but the relay is down again. It was down in the morning. I restartet it and now it's obvisely down again since noon. But nyx is still OK. Now I restartet it and enclosed the log because the log makes not really sence to me. I tried to install the speedtest-cli but I couldnt get it downloaded. So maybe there's a network-problem although I'm connected to the internet with the PC without problems and the android-phone also gets connection. Anyway, I rebootet the notebook (on which the relay (should) run and rebootet the router. Then I installed the speedtest-cli which I got downloaded and installed immediately. After restarting nyx I've made the speedtest: down 11,49 Mbit/s and up 6,33 Mbit/s. For comparison, the PC has 33 Mbit/s down and 6,5 Mbit/s up. So now I'm allittle bit confused. Besides: I can't start the tor-browser, it says "SIGNATURE VERIFICATION FAILED!" You might e under attack, or there might just be a networking problem. Click Start try the download again. Then it starts downloading the Tor Browser Bundle again and afterwards I get the same error. Firefox works fine. The logs don't show any problems with the relay itself (so far as I could see), but they do maybe indicate that this computer has a flaky internet connection. The worst case is that your relay is getting enough attention that your home router can't handle it and freezes up or starts dropping packets or something. Or maybe things are just flaky. That's the next thing to investigate.

That's an unrelated and different problem. The problem is that you're not actually using Tor Browser -- you're using a separate program called "torbrowser-launcher", which has some bugs that you're hitting. Most likely these bugs are fixed in a later version of torbrowser-launcher that your distro doesn't have yet. The simplest answer is to switch to actually using Tor Browser: https://www.torproject.org/download/download-easy --Roger

Be aware the home routers often struggle to handle the large number of connections that tor relays create. In **worst case** scenario you will have to reboot it every hour, best case every three / four weeks. Generally speaking most home routers would be able to handle <10MBs of tor traffic with some capacity left over for maybe two PC's web surfing / YouTube etc depending on your broadband speed. For some perspective, I experimented with installing OpenWRT on medium-old "high end" router, the interface informed me it could support up to 16000 simultaneous TCP connections. Fair enough however the gigabit Ethernet maxed the routers poxy 600mhz single core processor 80mbits If you are using Wifi and have poor signal (far away from router, interference from nearby Wifis etc) this will obviously impact your relay. If your netbook does not have a Ethernet connection consider buying a USB to Ethernet device. Thanks.

Thanks for the answers! The relay-netbook is connected to the router via LAN and a powerline-passthrough. I'm in touch with my provider to get a new router, we'll see. My longest on-time was about 10 days I suppose. I'd like to do clean shut down every week and then reboot (or I get the new router). For now I hope I get a few days on. I downloaded tor-browser - works. Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com) Secure Email. ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ Original Message ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ Am 23. März 2018 11:16 PM schrieb Gary <jaffacakemonster53@gmail.com>:

Things getting slower and slower. "Fast"-, "V2Dir"- and "stable"-flags are gone. Speedtest (netztest.at): 24 Mbit/s down and 6,2 Mbit/s up, ping: 43 ms. Notebook and router where both rebooted yesterday. Now took a last look at it before sending this mail and all flags except "stable" are back. Average bandwidth: 2,5 down and 2,3 up. I'm sorry I should of said speedtest-cli / speedtest.net is not the most scientific way to monitor & measure your relay as it might take a different circuit every time. It also puts extra strain on the network. Still it is interesting to see how fast your CPU will let the transfer go. Perhaps run it once every few days and average out the results over a long time. I dont have "numbers evidence" but I am sure the network is getting faster now the DoS mitigations have been introduced. Notebook and router where both rebooted yesterday.
My router is from my ISP, part of their marketing is to "have the strongest wifi signal" and one of the things to help with this is the router automatically reboots every 10 to 14 days. Before I had a relay it waited until the night when their is no broadband usage however because its always in use now it apparently won't wait more than 14 days and reboot anyway. Also, sometimes the people I live with interfere with it from time to time when they deem their Netflix experience to be poor. Together these occasional reboots are fine and wont break the relay but they will break peoples connections that go through the relay. Tor will work out when their is an IP address change (caused by router reboot) and work around it but the relay will lose some flags for a short while. I try to wait until there is an OS update and reboot the PC and router at the same time, perhaps you should try the same. Thanks.

Hi, smichel0:
Please file a bug with your system OS and other system-specific details so that it can be fixed. Mathew is right, Arm is old and broken. Nyx is faster and visual glitch free. I used pip install nyx on Raspbian but it looks like you are using Ubuntu, but give it a try maybe. I done a quick search and could not find nyx on either Debian & Ubuntu repos's and on deb.torproject.org. I am not sure why its not even on the official Tor repo. If you keep using arm dont worry when things look funny / strange / screen full of errors it shouldn't break your relay. Thanks
