Hi all,
I knew that starting this journey would be a wild ride where I would learn and experience a lot! But now that my first abuse complaints have appeared I feel a bit on edge while I reply to them, frantically checking my spelling dotting my I's and crossing my T's.
Will these emails always feel so scary to reply to? or do they start to feel just normal after a while? What was it all like in the beginning when you guys opened up your first exit?
Kind regards,
- Willmar

you are getting used to it.
modify the https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/doc/TorAbuseTemplates https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/doc/TorAbuseTemplates templates to your liking and send out the response.
just wait for your first subpoena :)

Let's hope my it's not gonna happen anytime soon.
Now I kinda regret that I didn't sign up for the "IT and legal" class at my school.

you are also getting used to subpoenas. if you are in a western country it should be legal. from my experience you don’t have to fear the higher tier police aka federal state police or secret service, they know what they are doing. if you are living in a small village you perhaps should contact the local police. they have no IT department, so no clue and thats what would be worrying to me. enjoy your ride!

thanx for all the flowers :-)
I took the ssl certificate expiration 11/06 as an occasion to discontinue the service. Actually behind the scenes everything is still running. The mysql db is fed with Tor live data. Only the Apache config prevents access. I'm just too lazy to renew the ssl certificate or to switch to letsencrypt and I declined offers sell the site.

It just has to be said: Creating a single-host Let's Encrypt cert is very easy on Debian Linux, which you seem to be using. Install Certbot, shutdown Apache, run Certbot, modify Apache's certificate path settings, start Apache. I'd offer to do it for you, but somehow I doubt you'll grant me root access to your server. ;-)
No pressure.

Hallo Olaf,

I don't think anyone would be bothered if you put an ad-service on the page to generate some revenue. Should cover the cost and generate a small profit. Torstatus is nice!

Please don't. Ad services are far too often used to distribute malware. Some kind of community-funding jar would be much safer. (Patreon, ko.fi, etc).

https://torstatus.blutmagie.de is resurrected :-) Today I spend the amount of 17 USD for a new ssl certificate. Next step is to negotiate more ram with my Russian provider. 2 GB working set became too small for the mysql db and about 30-50 concurrent Apache processes.
regarding ads:
I would have to pay income tax for revenues generated with ad services. No kidding! German tax offices are Legion. They do not forgive. They do not forget.
By the way, what is wrong with https://torstatus.rueckgr.at? Basically this site provides the same information as blutmagie.

The worst of this is past, mostly solved. Folks who come up with these target high volume sites to pay for the huge investment in time to develop exploits and game past ad-service defenses. Survival rate a few of days in the wild. Salad days for the bad guys are gone.

no doubt, but it's fair and reasonable for site operators to generate some ad revenue; multirbl.valli.org did it for ages though he seems to have stopped, perhaps for the reason mentioned below

Fabulous, thank you!
(perhaps Nginx could swap in place of Apache and use less memory)

A practical concern, interesting they chase small web sites though I suppose the tax offices have it automated. Does a threshold minimum for filing exist? Perhaps a test to see if worth the trouble to fill out forms and write checks. I'd guess ad services generate helpful reports for that.

Blutmagie is more polished in the details, has kept up with Tor changes. I like especially that bandwidth numbers are actual utilization rather than observed maximum. Individual relay page graphs work. Only issue is page rendering a bit slow, probably due to dynamic calculation of row height. Not a web dev but I am willing to look at figuring out how to correct that and contribute a change.

I know they chase ebay sellers. In Germany one has to pay income tax on the total amount of income. In my case this is what I earn in my job plus the hypothetical revenues from ad services. Only about 9.000 Euros income per year is the tax-free amount.
