Hi friends,
I'd like to collect some anecdata about this issue regarding Wikipedia blocking edits from Tor non-exit relays: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/24758
If you run a non-exit relay, would you be so kind as to go to wikipedia.org from that IP, click "edit" on any page, and report to me off-list if your relay is blocked or not? In your message, please give me your relay address and let me know if it's ever functioned as an exit before.
Thank you!
Alison

Back in the day, as in the first days of my running Tor, I briefly ran an exit node and promptly got a DMCA take-down notice from my ISP and an education. I *might* be able to dig up its fingerprint...
For the benefit of others, to test this from a mac:
1) I ssh-ed to my relay using ssh -D 5555 user@relay
2) I opened up Firefox, went to preferences, at the bottom hit Network Proxy Settings
3) I set *only* the socks host to localhost port 5555, Socks %, and set Proxy DNS at the bottom
4) I went to whatismyipaddress.com and confirmed it came from my relay IP
5) I went to wikipedia and visited a non-front-page article (it turns out articles from the front page often don't have an Edit link at the top)
6) I got something that looked like an edit page, but at the top it said:
------- You do not have permission to edit this page, for the following reason:
Your IP address is in a range which has been blocked on all wikis.
The block was made by Vituzzu (meta.wikimedia.org). The reason given is Open proxy: Linode (+2600:3C03:0:0:F03C:91FF:FE70:63CA).
Start of block: 22:53, 16 June 2013 Expiration of block: 12:51, 21 May 2018 --------
Alison: My relay is https://atlas.torproject.org/#details/C0EDB08D7540D1DD3CA69809ED17D979F51B66... and it has never been an exit.

Wikipedia says:
Your IP address is in a range which has been blocked on all wikis.
The block was made by Masti (meta.wikimedia.org). The reason given is Open proxy.
Start of block: 18:42, 13 July 2017 Expiration of block: 18:42, 13 July 2018
You can contact Masti to discuss the block. You cannot use the "Email this user" feature unless a valid email address is specified in your account preferences and you have not been blocked from using it. Your current IP address is 2a01:4f8:141:608d::2, and the blocked range is 2A01:4F8:0:0:0:0:0:0/32. Please include all above details in any queries you make.
Interestingly they are blocking the entire /32 which probably means all of Hetzner at least at that site. Which probably means they are not using a tor-specific block list here.)
Unfortunately I don't have a non-tor-node server there to cross-check.
Tor node is 'fastlane'.

And they are blocking digitalocean /16 block
Your current IP address is 45.55.xxx.yyy, and the blocked range is 45.55.0.0/16. Please include all above details in any queries you make. You are currently unable to edit Wikipedia. You are still able to view pages, but you are not currently able to edit, move, or create them. Editing from 45.55.0.0/16 has been blocked (disabled) by Materialscientist for the following reason(s): The IP address that you are currently using has been blocked because it is believed to be a web host provider. To prevent abuse, web hosts may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. You will not be able to edit Wikipedia using a web host provider.
Hi,
Besides being a relay operator, I'm a sysop on the French Wikipedia.
On all the Wikimedia projects, we have several blocking options. Tor relays are concerned by two of them: * IPs of the exit nodes are automatically blocked based on the public list, see the 'TorBlock' Mediawiki Extension [1]. * When sysops found that vandalisms are coming from IPs bellowing to a hosting company (that are not likely to be legitimate connexions), it very often means that there are some open proxys so we manually "soft-block" (or block when needed) the complete IP range, see [2]. As a side effect, relays are often located on this kind of IP ranges, that's why guard and middle nodes are also often blocked.
"Soft-blocks" can be simply bypassed using an registered account, while to bypass a full block (to edit while using tor for example) it is needed to ask for an "IP block exempt flag", see [3] and [4].
