FWIW, I have been running various Debian-derived distros (Ubuntu and Devuan, currently) on vintage Macs since Apple switched to Intel processors (and I ran Yellow Dog for years back in the PPC days). You should be able to run it, should you want to try going down that road again. I usually use the text-based installer from an optical disc and don't install a GUI (in other words, I use the "server" distro of Ubuntu; with Devuan and vanilla Debian I think you just tell the installer that you don't want a GUI).
