Hi! I have been invited to present Tor at the “Hackadon” [1] organized by Without Model [2] this evening. Sarah Gold [3] did an introduction talk were she addressed topics like privacy and control over computers and data, developping free software tools by working closer with users, cooperation between designers and developpers, funding and sustainability. She very recently started a new company called IF to work on these topics. We most likely will have the chance to meet in Valencia. Six different projects working on open culture and tools then had five minutes to pitch what they were up to. After rounds of questions, the audience was invited to distribute money that the organizers had collected between the projects. 620€ were gathered for The Tor Project and several attendees came to me to say how much the appreciate our work. :) [1]: It's a word play as “don” in French means donation, and as the whole sounds close to “hackathon”. This caught my eye... Looks like there are ~8000 direct users, and 100-200 bridge users now. There aren't many details, and the English version of the press release is a direct Google Translate from the original. I couldn't find the step-by-step guide mentioned, I'm thinking it's accessible after you log in but maybe it's not published yet.

This mailing list was one of the outcomes of our initial UX team meeting on Nov 16th, which took place on #tor-project IRC channel. This list is going to be a place for UX researchers, designers, developers and whoever else who cares about the usability of security software. Berlin Trip Photos

Hi all, for the benefit of those of you that came without cameras here's a few photos from our recent meetup. Avoiding people misses much of the best bits but oh well, here's what I got... https://www.atagar.com/transfer/tmp/berlin_2015.tar 01 - Stain glassed window in SeaTac I found especially neat. 02-04 - Nick and I hit the Berlin zoo the first day. :P 05 - Titanic hotel breakfast. 06 - Damn I'm jealous of Berlin's public transit. 07-13 - Field Station Berlin Teufelsberg. 14-15 - Spy gadgets at the Stasi museum. One-page information sheets about projects

Hello all, Recently, I was in meetings with a broad cross-section of funders (mostly from foundations), and heard a lot about their concerns. After talking to people more one-on-one, it became clear that we should do something to combat the "fear factor" as one funder put it. These sessions on fundraising challenges were very illuminating -- I've never heard a funder talk about being afraid to fund a project that doesn't actually solve the problem it sets out to solve. One idea I came up with to combat funder fear is for people to create a set of one-pagers that show off their project and address the challenges they face. Startups do this all the time when talking to investors, for the same reasons. But no one (AFAIK) in circumvention does this. It's also a good way to answer questions that funders care about, without necessarily having to be in a funding/application cycle right then. Questions like: - How does this fix [problem] in [country]? [2] - How does this contribute to your advocacy outcome? - (For some funders) How is this tied in with their ideal outcome? - How are you applying traditional M&E numbers to your tech projects?[1] As in, how many users are you helping, how many people get trained with the money you raise? How do you define success? Funders are leery of funding x developers to do y without that being mapped to projected outcomes. "We need $100,000 to fund 75% of one developer for one year" is not very useful without the context.
