by Antoine Beaupré 01 Oct '26

01 Oct '26

Hi! Following an internal survey ([tpo/tpa/team#42782][]), TPA has just adopted a weekly, three hour maintenance window starting at 18:00UTC every Thursday, which is equivalent to: - 10:00 US/Pacific - 13:00 US/Eastern - 15:00 America/Sao_Paulo - 19:00 Europe/Amsterdam - 21:00 Africa/Nairobi - 07:00 Pacific/Auckland ... and, with daylight saving changes for places that observe it: - 11:00 US/Pacific - 14:00 US/Eastern - 20:00 Europe/Amsterdam - 06:00 Pacific/Auckland [tpo/tpa/team#42782]: https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/tpa/team/-/work_items/42782 This is in addition to the already existing (but up to now undocumented) daily maintenance window between 06:00 and 07:00 UTC when unattended upgrades are already scheduled. 06:00 UTC is equivalent to: - 22:00 US/Pacific - 01:00 US/Eastern - 03:00 America/Sao_Paulo - 07:00 Europe/Amsterdam - 09:00 Africa/Nairobi - 19:00 Pacific/Auckland ... or, with daylight saving changes: - 23:00 US/Pacific - 02:00 US/Eastern - 08:00 Europe/Amsterdam - 18:00 Pacific/Auckland Maintenance *MAY* be scheduled outside of maintenance windows in special cases, including during nights and weekends. As before, emergency outages are announced on IRC, in `#tor-project`. Prolonged or planned outages are also be featured on the <https://torprojectstatus.org/> site and by email to `tor-project(a)lists.torproject.org`. A new Nextcloud calendar ([TPA Maintenance Windows][]) can be used to track the weekly maintenance windows. [TPA Maintenance Windows]: https://nc.torproject.net/apps/calendar/p/RFADLmYC3nFrij3t Future changes to the maintenance window times will be announced to this mailing lists. Details on the decision including reasoning, alternatives considered, and maintenance windows examples are available in ADR 111: https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/tpa/team/-/wikis/policy/0111-maintenance-… Feedback and comments are welcome by email or in: https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/tpa/team/-/work_items/42782 Thank you for your attention! a. -- Antoine Beaupré torproject.org system administration

Hey everyone! Here are our meeting logs: https://meetbot.debian.net/tor-meeting/2026/tor-meeting.2026-09-24-16.00.ht… And our meeting pad: Anti-censorship work meeting pad -------------------------------- Anti-censorship -------------------------------- Next meeting: Thursday,October 1, 16:00 UTC Facilitator: shelikhoo ^^^(See Facilitator Queue at tail) Weekly meetings, every Thursday at 16:00 UTC, in #tor-meeting at OFTC (channel is logged while meetings are in progress) This week's Facilitator: onyinyang == Goal of this meeting == Weekly check-in about the status of anti-censorship work at Tor. Coordinate collaboration between people/teams on anti-censorship at the Tor Project and Tor community. == Links to Useful documents == * Our anti-censorship roadmap: * Roadmap:https://gitlab.torproject.org/groups/tpo/anti-censorship/-/boards * The anti-censorship team's wiki page: * https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/anti-censorship/team/-/wikis/home * Past meeting notes can be found at: * https://lists.torproject.org/pipermail/tor-project/ * Tickets that need reviews: from projects, we are working on: * All needs review tickets: * https://gitlab.torproject.org/groups/tpo/anti-censorship/-/merge_requests?s… * Projects the TPI anti-censorship team is working on: * Project 146: Expanding access to digital media through the use of secure communications, infrastructure, tools, and techniques * https://gitlab.torproject.org/groups/tpo/anti-censorship/-/issues/?label_na… * Project 170: Monitoring and reporting on censorship against the Tor network * epic: https://gitlab.torproject.org/groups/tpo/-/epics/17 * Project 201: Signaling channels * board https://gitlab.torproject.org/groups/tpo/-/boards/2675?label_name[]=Project… == Announcements == * == Discussion == * jah * I've been working an PT that is implementing a subset of Upgen and I have questions regarding integration but also on the current development of supertunnel, I tried out to reach robgjansen in the #tor-anticensorship a couple days ago. * As I did not got any answer yet I thought I could join this meeting and ask them directly: * 1. (upgen) Did you thought about how to encode and distribute brideg line already? * 2. (upgen) Do you think some rotation of generated protocols would be useful? (in other words for a long running bridge, do we want to peridocically switch protocols... as far as I can tell this could actually increase the risk of being identified... but I'm not sure I did not put lot of thoughts into this) * 3. (supertunnel) It looks like you design this so it could be use as a layer encapsulating an other PT like prometeus, is that correct? * if yes then I'm trying to understand why we don't prefer having such resiliency features directly inside Tor * so it is not dependent on a specific PT. Literally such resiliency should be useful also when using direct connection and no PT involved, wdyt? * Rust-pt ( A Rust-Based framework for Pluggable Transports' development) * I have few question regarding PT framework * 1. some anti-censorships' member mentioned that Tor may prefer special style for official PT framework. May I ask what is the exactly `style` * 2. Also @robgjansen said that they would like to review, and I tried to reach out but they have not answered my DM * 3. Regarding community, may I ask if Tor have way to reach out PT developers Because I would like to let them know there is a new framework :) == Actions == * == Interesting links == * https://riposte.levelflow.org/2026/07/deltachat/ * RusTLS block by fingerprinting when more than 3 connections are made to the same sNI * https://github.com/pryty26/rust-pt == Reading group == * We will discuss "" on * * Questions to ask and goals to have: * What aspects of the paper are questionable? * Are there immediate actions we can take based on this work? * Are there long-term actions we can take based on this work? * * Is there future work that we want to call out in hopes that others will pick it up? * Next in the Reading Group Queue: * == Updates == Name: This week: - What you worked on this week. Hey everyone, we had a meeting yesterday, and here are our minutes. # Roll call: who's there and emergencies - anarcat - groente - jerome - lelutin - zen-fu # Express check-in - how are you doing? - blocked on anything? # 2027 Roadmap draft presentation and discussion anarcat presented a draft 2027 roadmap based on previous conversations with the team and other team leads. More team leads need to be contacted to see if they have anything planned for 2027 that will affect us. The [pad has more details][] including a modified 5 year Tails roadmap. [pad has more details]: https://pad.tails.net/RBbLFv-TTCqk6dtp2WLXCA The Tails merge tasks should be added to https://gitlab.torproject.org/groups/tpo/tpa/-/work_items/5 when we adopt this roadmap, and the others to a new 2027 roadmap epic similar to https://gitlab.torproject.org/groups/tpo/tpa/-/work_items/2 Here is the modified roadmap that we ended up with: ## Must have - object storage (previously scheduled for 2026) - minio retirement - GitLab artifacts in object storage - ... with backups - ... scalable - Matrix home server deployment - tails merge items: - Monitoring (Icinga retirement, may be completed by 2026) - Shifts (may be completed in 2026) - Puppet merge completion (may be completed in 2026) - Authentication (start IDM deployment) - plan for the weblate merge in 2028 - GitLab (gitlab.tails.boum.org retirement, still backed by Jenkins CI, but plan for retiring Jenkins in 2029) - web team - year end campaign - not sure how much movement there will be, marble migration? ## Nice to have - merge hedgedoc (mostly switch authentication to gitlab.tpo, change domain, rebuild VM in our clusters) - Backups - Debian 14 "forky" upgrades (likely released in ~august 2027) ## Postponed to 2028 or later - email mailboxes - research on Nextcloud improvements or replacement - Firewall merge (previously scheduled for 2026) - SSO, full Tails authentication merge (previously scheduled for 2026) # Next meeting October 5th, we hope to discuss how we will organise our mornings during the Rotterdam meeting. # Metrics of the month * host count: 130, Puppet 129 (!) * number of Apache servers monitored: 33, hits per second: 725 * number of self-hosted nameservers: 6, mail servers: 11 * pending upgrades: 0, reboots: 0 * average load: 0.82, memory available: 4.7 TB/7.9 TB, running processes: 251 * disk free/total: 115.8 TB/255.3 TB * bytes sent: 701.2 MB/s, received: 499.4 MB/s * [GitLab tickets][]: 283 tickets including... * Needs Triage: 0 * Not Scheduled: 179 * Backlog: 70 * Next: 24 * Doing: 10 * (closed: 4663) * [~Needs Information][]: 5 open, 140 closed * [~Needs Review][]: 4 open, 219 closed * [~Technical Debt][]: 0 open, 0 closed [Gitlab tickets]: https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/tpa/team/-/boards [~Needs Information]: https://gitlab.torproject.org/groups/tpo/tpa/-/issues/?state=opened&label_n… [~Needs Review]: https://gitlab.torproject.org/groups/tpo/tpa/-/issues/?state=opened&label_n… [~Technical Debt]: https://gitlab.torproject.org/groups/tpo/tpa/-/issues/?state=opened&label_n… -- Antoine Beaupré torproject.org system administration

New scoped labels available in GitLab
by Duncan R. 03 Sep '26

03 Sep '26

Hi everyone, As part of the GitLab Ultimate Rollout <https://gitlab.torproject.org/groups/tpo/-/work_items/1>¹, the team have gradually been deploying scoped labels across our GitLab instance (credit to the GitLab Ultimate Task Force for their ongoing work here). This work is being tracked in the Scoped Label Strategy and Rollout <https://gitlab.torproject.org/groups/tpo/-/work_items/5> epic². Scoped labels are groups of mutually exclusive labels that are prefixed with a single term, or “scope", like so: ‘scope::label’. You can read more about scoped labels and their use-cases on GitLab Docs <https://docs.gitlab.com/user/project/labels/#scoped-labels>³, but one example you may already be familiar with are the Priority labels <https://gitlab.torproject.org/groups/tpo/-/labels?search=priority::>⁴ that were deployed last year. Several months ago we also deployed a suite of scoped Product labels <https://gitlab.torproject.org/groups/tpo/-/labels?search=product::>⁵, combining numerous existing labels used across GitLab. Today, the new scoped Product labels are primarily used in the Applications, Product and UX groups on GitLab, but may be of relevance to other teams too. This week we grouped various existing labels — Bug, Task, Documentation, Feature and Technical Debt, in addition to a new Enhancement label — into scoped Kind labels <https://gitlab.torproject.org/groups/tpo/-/labels?search=kind::>⁶. These labels should be used to classify work items (e.g. epics, issues, tasks et cetera) based on the work needing done. Any work items that were previously tagged with one of the existing labels should be migrated automatically over to the corresponding new label. For example, if you had an issue tagged as “Bug”, that issue should now be tagged as “Kind::Bug”. Equally, when you search for the “Bug” label in the work item attributes sidebar, you’ll notice that GitLab will return the “Kind::Bug” label instead now. New labels like Product:: and Kind:: are intended to encourage consistency across GitLab, but Team Leads and project maintainers should decide for themselves if using these labels as part of their workflow would be beneficial. The aim here is to provide helpful tools for issue-wranglers, and not to burden everyone with unnecessary labelling bureaucracy. If you would like to see an additional label added to either of these scoped sets, or have any other feedback, please open an issue in tpo/team <https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/team/-/work_items>⁷ or feel free to ping me directly. Note that if the label you would like to add is specific to a certain team or project, with less applicability to the wider organization, it may make more sense to add it at the group or project level rather than the TPO level.
