Hi! What? ===== The Tor Project's jabber server will be shutdown in thirty days. Why? ==== In a recent review of provided services, the sysadmin team has decided to retire the XMPP/Jabber services offered by the Torproject.org domain. The service was used by only four persons in the last month, out of over thirty registered users and over a hundred users which could use the service. The service is also maintained only by a single person, who agrees on retiring the service. This is not a statement on the merits of the XMPP protocol, the Jabber project, or federation as a whole. Those principles are dear to our hearts, we just feel it's better to direct our energies on services that are used by a larger community. When? ===== In thirty days, the server will be shutdown and unreachable. The machine itself will be kept up for an extra 7 days in case of a serious problem and then decomissioned using our [normal process][]. It links to two sites with lists of alternative servers that you could easily switch to. One which we particularly recommend you consider is ran by the good birds at [Riseup.net][], a donation based service ran "for people and groups working on liberatory social change". If you already have an account there, you can already use their XMPP server, see their [chat documentation][] for more information. Riseup is an invite-only service: if you know a friend on Riseup, they can send you an invite, but please do not go around bugging them for invites, they don't give invites to people they don't know. Then you need to ask all your contacts to readd you to *their* roster, on the new server. It's a lossy process because people might have you on their roster without you having them on yours, but it might mean you get rid of spammers, on the upside. Here are instructions on how to migrate your roster from various clients. Gajim ----- 1. register with the new server and configure it in Gajim -> Accounts (control-shift-a) -> Add account 2. click on the new account 3. choose "Import contacts" 4. select the old account Gajim will then transfer the roster between the two accounts. This was tested in Gajim 1.1.2 Pidgin ------ As far as we could tell, there's no easy way to transfer rosters between accounts in Pidgin. Tkabber ------- 1. log into the old account (Tkabber -> Log in...) 2. export the roster (Tkabber -> Roster -> Export roster...) 3. log out (Tkabber -> Log out...) 4. log into the new account (Tkabber -> Log in...) 5. import the roster (Tkabber -> Roster -> Import roster...) Tkabber will then create the contacts in the roster of the new account. Tested with Tkabber 1.1.2. Jabber Migrate -------------- Finally, there's a tool that's designed specifically for migrating roster between servers, simply called "migrate". It used to be maintained on [Sourceforge][], but it seems to be abandoned there. Two forks have shown up on GitHub, from [jirutka][] and [spiculator][]. Note of those tools have been tested or reviewed by Torproject.org people. Use at your own risk. LDAP sudo passwords change now in effect

Hi, As announced last month, I have just finished deploying the change in the PAM configuration requiring a special password to authenticate with sudo on all of torproject.org servers. Preliminary tests do not show any problems, but it's possible you might have trouble running jobs with sudo if there's a configuration problem. [ticket system] registrations of users & next trac/gitlab meeting

Hi! At the last meeting there was a lot of discussion [0] around the registration of users in https://dip.torproject.org and people had a few suggestions to deal with spam and allow people to easily send bugs and track them (some suggestions were to create a web interface for anonymous users in front of gitlab, continue with cypherpunk account, install a forum with discourse). It seems that this last decision is the only blocker right now to move forward with a date for the migration. All the suggestions proposed involve extra work/resources right now that we do not have. With the objective of getting this done soon with the requirements we have, let's choose the minimum solution for moving to our gitlab instance and resolve all the other problems later. It would mean having registration open (at first at least but we can close it anytime) in https://dip.torproject.org and get a few of us (at least Pili and me are volunteering for this) to moderate who is registering and creating issues. Gitlab has a way for people to report users and we can monitor new accounts closely. And there is a way to whitelist and black list domains for sign-ups. If we see that this is a lot more work volume that what we have now in trac, we can close regisration and open accounts on request. Other gitlab instances have a lot of issues dealing with spam and it seems that it could get worst than at trac but we will deal with this once the migration to gitlab is done. Hello! Here is a short summary of the network team meeting from Monday: 1) We started out by looking at the 0.4.2 status page on Trac to see how we are doing there. Things are looking OK. Nick would like to see all 042-must tickets done before 1st of November such that we can begin to roll out release candidates. 2) We skipped going over Kanban board since dip.torproject.org was having some problems. 3) We skipped going over review assignments because none had been assigned at the given time due to vacation and public holiday. 4) We discussed how to handle the larger GSoD changes in the future and that Catalyst and Nick will work together on making progress on the current ticket. 5) Alex made an announcement about the monthly tor-project reports and people got a pad link to update during the month, such that we can get the October report out earlier. 6) We shortly discussed some of the proposals that are being discussed now and there was some confusion around the different proposals and ownership of them. September 2019 report for the Network Team

Hello Tor Project people, In September, the Network Team have worked on the following items: - Work on various new policy proposals in the network team: 1. PR policy. 2. Merge policy. 3. Commit policy. - Retirement of EOL relays. - 0.4.1.6 release - 0.4.2 release prep. We froze the 0.4.2.x series to new series, identified all the issues we want to fix on the 042Status page, put out an alpha, and started working on the pending issues. - C code style discussion Nick started working on a survey to figure out where we stand on issues of consistent code style. # Project to improve Onion Service [0] We started work on adopting OnionBalance features into onion services v3. We kicked off this activity by working on stem support for v3 descriptors. There is currently no support in stem to get descriptor information for v3 onion services (HSv3) and we have been tackling this issue by: 1. Implementing HSv3 descriptor encoding in stem, 2. Adding code to stem to calculate the Hidden Service Directories (HSDirs) that are responsible for these v3 descriptors, and 3. Investigating the best way to implement key blinding for HSv3 in stem. Additionally, we have been working on enhancing onion services overall by working on a number of bugfixes and improvements. We are very excited to announce that we now have complete support for IPv6 in v3 onion services. We have also been working on identifying bugs related to HSv3 timeouts[8] through the use of a health monitoring tool. As a result of this work we have now identified four new bugs and are in the process of writing fixes for them. We have also been making progress investigating an issue with missing HSv3 descriptors when setting up an intro circuit. All of these help to make v3 Onion services more scalable and stable which we hope will help with their adoption. We have also been busy working with the SecureDrop team over the past few months and are happy to share that the latest SecureDrop v1.0.0 release has added support for enabling v3 onion services. Other than that, work has continued on the Denial of Service (DoS) defenses with the implementation and merge of proposal 305 which allows HSv3 operators to send a number of DoS defense parameters to their introduction. We are also still in discussions regarding whether our proposed fix for an attack that forces rotation of the intro point for an onion service is good enough or whether we need to go back to the drawing board to find a better solution. Once the outstanding issues on these items are resolved, these features should be available from the first tor v0.4.2 stable release. # Project on Modularization of Key Aspects of the Tor Network [1] We have been working on refactoring our code to make the modules more resilient, segregated, and automatically testable. We started setting up a system to change how Tor modules should communicate, designed to reduce module complexity and maintenance burden. For that we created a generic publish/subscribe system for cross-module communications. We worked on rearranging files for the module dirauth so that more directory authority code can be compiled out when unneeded and spent time fixing bugs related the refactoring of key modules. We also refactored crypto_digest.c to have fewer ifdefs. We are working on distributing the config.c module across several modules [5][39][46]. It initializes many other modules, and provides the proper amounts to a set of global variables for the configuration settings. Similar to config.c, we are working to distribute the functionality of control.c across several modules [29] [47]. control.c queries and manipulates the internal states of many different subsystems, so it currently needs to know about all those internals. Hello, Here is a short summary of the network team meeting from Monday: 1) We started out by looking at the 0.4.2 status page on Trac to see how we are doing there. Some tickets were pushed to 0.4.3. We use the keyword `042-deferred` for tickets pushed to 0.4.3 in Trac. 2) We went over our kanban board to see if it is up-to-date. A lot of people are back to working on sponsored items as well as 0.4.2 items. 3) We went over the reviewer assignments by David and George. Everyone should have gotten around 1.2 reviews each this week. #31943 got priority as it is part of our GSoD project. 4) Alex asked for people to comment on a pad such that we can begin doing monthly network team reporting to tor-project(a)lists.torproject.org 5) A question was asked on how to handle the S27 ticket #14389 for 0.4.3 inclusion and the answer was that it was going to be discussed at the S27 meeting Tuesday this week. 6) No new policies to discuss this week.
