Are there countries where using Tor is illegal?

Hi, (Sorry if this question has already been asked in the past, feel free to point me to the relevant resources.) I know that the legal FAQs by the EFF state that: «we believe that running a Tor relay — including an exit relay that allows people to anonymously send and receive traffic — is legal under U.S. law.»[1] I also know there is a list of countries for which there is legislation that exclude communication service providers from liability. They are indicated in the Legal of the Tor Exit Guidelines page[2], they are USA, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, France, and Sweden. >From some articles in the press[3a][3b] it may be illegal - depending on how you interpret the wording[*] - to use Tor (and other technologies such as VPNs or proxies) in the UAE, with fines ranging in the millions of dirhams (hundreds of thousand of dollars). A couple of weeks ago it was discussed - on this list as well - that a law was introduced to the state parliament to ban Tor[4a][4b]. This follows a case of some months ago of a Russian Tor exit node operator being arrested for inciting mass riots and terrorism[4c][4d]. The idea of blocking VPNs or Tor seems to have already been considered in the past[4e]. This infographic about pluggable transports[5] suggests access to the Tor network is censored or limited in China, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Kazakhstan. Tor being censored orblocked may be different from it being illegal. What about other countries? Is there a place where I can find more about this topic? Broken U2F token in Tor Browser with latest Gitlab update

Hello! Tor Browser disables by default WebAuthn which has been fine with our Gitlab instance so far (but does not work so well with our forum) if you use a token like a Yubikey. However, this does no longer work with the latest Gitlab update it seems, which we picked up automatically yesterday: """ WebAuthn (supported, but disabled by default, since GitLab 13.4) is now enabled by default. Users can now use Touch ID on Apple devices as a second authentication factor, as long as their browser supports it. This also eliminates error messages seen in browsers that are deprecating U2F in favor of WebAuthn. """ So, if you have such a token enabled (as I do) and suddenly can't log into our Gitlab anymore you can test your recovery code setup (hehe) and then finally think about flipping the `security.webauth.webauthn` to `true` as you would need to do anyway if you want to log into our forum with your token enabled. Network Team - Upcoming Releases tor.git - December 2021

Greetings everyone! Network team will be releasing on Thursday a new Tor 0.4.6.x stable and 0.4.7.x alpha containing various fixes but nothing critical. One important fix is the one removing DNS timeouts from the overload general signal. You will find more details about it here: https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/network-health/team/-/issues/139 Another thing we would like to clarify. We are way pass our usual timeline of 6 months per stable version with regards to the 0.4.7.x series. The reason is that we've been working very hard on this new congestion control feature (prop#324) for the network that is not only very complex but takes a long time to test and simulate. And thus, we made the decision to delay 0.4.7.x first stable version until congestion control is to our standard and hopefully a wonderful thing :). The estimate for that might not be until February if all goes well but don't take my words for it. In the meantime, we'll be rolling out more alphas as important bugs need to be release. Nothing is set in stone, we regularly assess the schedule for 0.4.7.
