Hi all I've noticed the "Simulator for slow Internet connections " project on the volunteer page and I have relevant experience. Who can I contact to lend a hand?

Hi Adam, What were you thinking about doing on this project? I'd be happy to help out where I can. Steven. On 11 Jan 2012, at 20:36, Adam Katz wrote:

Well, I myself didn't have anything specific in mind but i have some experience with the linux tc utility as well as with generating realistic background traffic. I was wondering whether I could help on any of the existing projects or help establish a new one. On Sat, Jan 14, 2012 at 5:15 AM, Steven Murdoch <Steven.Murdoch@cl.cam.ac.uk> wrote:

I think Nick's comments summarized the current state of thinking. ExperimenTor and Shadow are the best Tor simulators to use for this project. The big missing pieces are: - an automated framework for setting up experiments with slow Internet connections with ExperimenTor and Shadow, then collecting and summarizing results - Tools for generating realistic link characteristics (delay and packet dropping), and for collecting data on the link properties found in particular locations Steven.

Hi, I'm taking this off-list since it isn't strictly Tor-related. 01/20/2012 11:55 AM, Adam Katz:

We'd gladly accept any help you can offer in the Tails project [1]. We're in need of a test suite where we can simulate slow Internet connections that you seem have the necessary expertise for (we're looking at using tc as backend): https://tails.boum.org/todo/simulating_internet_connections/ Please let us know if you are interested! Cheers! [1] Tails is a Linux based, privacy enhancing LiveCD that uses Tor extensively. Website: https://tails.boum.org

Woops, seems like I forgot about this. Ah well, I hope no one minds if we're taking this on-list. However, it might be more suitable for you to respond to the Tails development mailing list though: https://mailman.boum.org/listinfo/tails-dev Cheers!

You might want to see whether what the ExperimentTor[1] and Shadow[2] projects are doing in this area. They're two of the big tor simulation projects right now. (ISTR that there are more that are not coming to mind right now.) [1] http://crysp.uwaterloo.ca/software/exptor/index.html [2] http://shadow.cs.umn.edu/ -- Nick
