I don't know whether I understood the problem well or not but I came up with the attached (trivial) solution. Could someone please check if it's ok?

Best course of action is probably to attach the patch to the ticket, and set the status to “needs_review”. Andrea or Nick are likely to take a look the next time they'll scan open tickets, if not earlier.
