Hola todos/todas!
Here are a few of the action items we discussed during our two Global South sessions at the Amsterdam Tor Meeting:
*Get a Tor Project board member from the Global South: find some names of possible candidates and then send to Linus and Biella (board members) * Create local Tor meetups and have Tor Project provide resources (money, people, other materials) * Hold the Tor Meeting in the Global South * Support local conferences, eg Cryptorave * More Tor infrastructure in the Global South (relays, DirAuths, BWAuths, etc)
These were the items that seemed to come up most frequently in our discussion and seem like good starting points for this communication channel. There are more action items and more discussion points here [1].
One thing I'd like to prioritize personally is holding the Tor Meeting in the Global South. We discussed some possible locations and some of the metrics we'd need to consider in identifying good places. Those metrics include: - overall cost - visa requirements - length of travel from the EU and the US/Canada (though we will consider this, we discussed how people in the Global South have had to deal with long travel times to the EU for all past meetings, so if we find a good place that is a great distance from the EU, so be it) - internet speeds - possible conference center locations - Tor's relationship to the local community (the relationship as it exists, and opportunities to build it more)
Any other data points that we should consider? Anyone want to throw out some initial ideas for host cities? Some of the cities already discussed a bit include Quito, Mexico City, São Paulo, and Lima. There was some rough consensus that South America is the best first place for a meeting in the South, but it would be great to hear from people who disagree on that.

Hi everyone,
I want to bump my earlier message to this list, since the list is so brand new and maybe not many people were subscribed earlier in the week. tl;dr, I want to start brainstorming and planning for the first Tor Meeting in the Global South.

Hi Alison, hi all,
I’m Claudio Ruiz, former Derechos Digitales and now at Creative Commons working on global strategy. Talking just on my own capacity just wanted to say happy to help, provide some experience on the field and open to brainstorm on a GS Tor meeting.
Saludos!

It is very quiet in here...
About the Tor meeting in the southern part of the planet, I'm not sure in what extent I could contribute to organizing and planning it, since I'm not living in there right now.
I think I can be more useful particularly in creating/providing resources in spanish for the local Tor meetups and for the ultimate Tor meeting. Really, there isn't much non-sensacionalist, positive, accurate, and updated info about the Tor project in audio/video/graphics in spanish. I think these are quite important to expand the knowledge about Tor in latinamerican communities.
So, if anyone wants to work on that line or have more thoughts on this, please let me know and we can see the way forward.
Thank you Alison for setting up the mailing list!
Abrazos, Clau.

It's okay if you don't live there! We can all still benefit from feedback about what cities might be a better fit than others. I'm working on a pad right now where I'm breaking down cost, travel times, and some other factors for the main cities we discussed at the AMS meeting. I'll share that within a few hours.

That would be really useful. We are working on the very early stages of outreach.torproject.org, and that would be a perfect place to host materials like this. Right now, we only have things like this: https://people.torproject.org/~karsten/tor-brochure/tor-brochure-es.pdf.
So, if anyone wants to work on that line or have more thoughts on this, please let me know and we can see the way forward.

Hello, I am drebs from Brasil. I am also willing to support, despite I am not sure if Brasil would be the best fit for a meeting in global south.
Translation (to/from portuguese) and nodes deployment are of special interest for me, and if brasil is finally seen as a good fit i can contribute with local contacts and some organization.
:)
