Thank you Sukhbir! You nailed it the first time. Thunderbird 17.0.10 
does not generate any issue. Even better, as proof that the DNS is done 
via Tor, the hidden service works as good as any other mail server.

Sorry for being an ignorant, but shouldn't TorBirdy list as incompatible 
with Thunderbird other than 17.*?
