But why a flash sandbox instead of a flash alternative?

See the shortcomings of FireFox transformed by your work into Tor 
Browser. And there are a couple of flash players around that are open 
source, if not free software. Building a flash alternative with privacy 
in mind instead of a 1:1 clone would be nice. Sandboxing sounds so 
silly, see the two decades old chase between OS/2 and winlib.

A better question would be why port to a closed technology when it would 
be better for all to let it die? de Icaza might have an answer as he 
specialises into this kind of cloning. Myself I have given up on Flash a 
few months ago, after blocking it in most my browsers. I don't feel its 
absence. As for Youtube, download the video and VLC does a good job of 
handling such files I heard.
