More like configuring ssh on a nonstandard port: You can still
get to it with off-the-shelf software (as long as you consider
tor and a socks-capable netcat as such).

Random association: Something like onion.to could be made
to work for any ports on IPv6 by putting the onion number
into the lower address bits of the v6 address the name server
returns; then the connection forwarder does not need to
look into http headers or the like. :-)
