What to gain by adding a custom port on a hidden service address?

Not much at all, as far as I can tell.

Maybe they're doing it to prevent people who try to index .onion addresses
from finding their service. But that's not a very compelling example,
because if you learn about the port when you learn about the .onion
address, the gig is up.

My guess would be that they're running the service locally on port 8080,
and they didn't realize that they could get their Tor to map the "virtual"
port 80 onto the "bound" port 8080.
