Found the tor and vidalia bug trackers, looks like the OSX installer  
has been broken since at least 9.01.09 ticket #512


Fix below works great (thanks Andrew): change your /Library/Vidalia/ 
vidalia.conf file from:


ProxyExecutableArguments=-c, /Applications/Vidalia.app/Contents/ 
Resources/polipo.conf

to:

ProxyExecutableArguments=-c \
/Applications/Vidalia.app/Contents/Resources/polipo.conf

bugs.torproject.org in the future, but the issue appears to be a missing
proxy config option in Vidalia Settings should read

"-c /Applications/Vidalia.app/Contents/Resources/polipo.conf"

In the vidalia.conf file, it's:

ProxyExecutableArguments=-c \
/Applications/Vidalia.app/Contents/Resources/polipo.conf
