well, i've actually got a riseup.net account, and the sign-up process is unacceptable for anonymity.  you need to enable javascript for at least one of the steps during the process, and you have to fill out "why" you want a riseup.net account, then your account has to be approved by an admin.  or, you need to know 2 people who already have an account to give you invite codes.

so far, it seems safe-mail is the way to go.  except that you are bound to using the web interface, i don't see any drawbacks.  their data retention maybe, but that can be inquired about....
