# OONI Monthly Report: January 2017

The OONI team kicked off the new year by working towards the release of
ooniprobe mobile apps. We also created a policy and specification for
probe orchestration and updated all of our documentation that informs
users of our data practices and of risks associated to the use of ooniprobe.

## ooniprobe mobile apps

Most of the development efforts leading up to the release of ooniprobe
mobile apps (for Android and iOS) in February were carried out in
January 2017.

These development efforts can be found through the following repositories:

* https://github.com/TheTorProject/ooniprobe-android
* https://github.com/TheTorProject/ooniprobe-ios/

## Probe orchestration

In January we wrote the following documentation:

* Probe orchestration specification:
https://github.com/TheTorProject/ooni-spec/blob/master/opos/OONI-Probe-Orchestration-System-Design.md

* Probe orchestration policy:
https://github.com/TheTorProject/ooni-spec/blob/master/opos/Measurements-and-url-policy.md

The goal of the OONI Probe Orchestration System (OPOS) is to support a
more dynamic and adaptive way of of instrumenting instances of ooniprobe.

In particular, the OPOS should allow us (the OONI project) to:

* Adjust the frequency of at which periodic scheduled measurements are run.

* Trigger a measurement on a specific input (URL, IP, keyword, etc.) for
a test that is already installed on the probe.

The ability to push new tests (as in test code) to probes is out of scope.

## Documentation: Data Policy & Risks

Through legal consultation, we updated OONI's "informed consent"
documentation to better reflect our data practices and to improve our
communication of potential risks associated to the use of ooniprobe.

In particular, we reviewed and updated the following documentation:

* OONI's Data Policy: https://ooni.torproject.org/about/data-policy/

* Risks documentation: https://ooni.torproject.org/about/risks/

* Risks section included in ooniprobe installation guide:
https://ooni.torproject.org/install/ooniprobe/#risks-of-running-ooniprobe

* Agreement signed with partners (when establishing partnerships)

## Measurement userbase

In January we received measurements from 60 different countries covering
more than 163 unique network vantage points.

During January ooniprobe was run more than 17,790 times.
