[tor-reports] Lunar's report for May 2013

Hi Tor enthusiasts, supporters and developers!

In May, I was planning to:

> Take care of support requests in french.

Done for 4 tickets. I've also worked on 5 help tickets in english. One
is still pending though and we have yet to find a way to circumvent
their network filters.

>  * Get to know the various features Transifex offers to teams once they
>    are activated for the Tor project.

It's quite an impovement to have actual teams. Transifex offers a
discussion space, notification and review processes.

This allowed me to discuss with Onizuka who have been keeping the french
translations up to date lately. We agreed that before reviewing the
current translations we need to agree on a glossary. We worked together
on the later for 3 hours. As an example, we discussed how to translate
“bridge” and we finally agreed to keep it untranslated (contrary to what
has been done in most french translation so far, except the one made by
Tails translators). We still need to schedule another work session to
round it up. Hopefully, getting a glossary done for french could help
moving #8773 forward.

The talk went well and we had good feedback. Recordings, slides and

The graphs about network diversity in the slides have been generated
using a Python script feeding on Compass output. Karsten suggested the
right kind of graph and the result looks pretty neat. I also helped
Roger produce an updated versions for his DIMACS talk a few days later.

While preparing those graphs, I spotted a bug in Compass (#8931, now
fixed) and added grouping by /16 network families (#8932, now in
production).

This talk raison d'être was the public kick-off for Nos oignons, the
Torservers.net-like french organization. All in the same day, on top of
the talk, the organization got a legal existence, started to collect
donation and got a public website. Still not running relays yet, but we
are getting closer. Bootstraping an organization requires an always
under-estimated amount of work. A good share of my time this month was
again on that front. A few journalists and several people showed up on
mailing-lists and IRC after the talk. Quite some time was also spent
welcoming and explaining the project and other Tor related matters.

>  * Work some more on Debian packages for OONI and its dependencies.
>    Wheezy should be released on 4/5th May. Getting out of the freeze
>    should help future work.

Some progress were made:

 * hellais revised the dependencies and we confirmed that most of what
   was missing was actually already in Debian.
 * Made a package for Parsley, now in unstable and testing.
 * Made a package for txsocksx, now in unstable.

Looks like Cyclone is the last missing dependency. Progress is tracked
in #8506.

Other Tor related task I've done in May:

 * Updated txtorcon to 0.8.1 in Debian unstable, testing and
   wheezy-backports.
 * Uploaded official backports for pyptlib and obfsproxy to
   Debian wheezy-backports.
 * Tried to reach the admins of the CCC relays to ask them to fix
   their family. No response so far.

What I would like to do in June:

 * Take care of support requests in french.
 * Finish the glossary for french translations and start reviewing the
   current strings.
 * Prepare the general talk about Tor at LSM2013 in Brussels on
   July 8th.
 * Work on packaging ooni-probe itself now that almost all dependencies
   are sorted out.
 * If there's enough time and energy, write a draft proposal on how Tor
   could avoid to select circuit with multiple relays in the same
   Autonomous System or AS-SET.
