 It's hard to give advice without knowing the details of what you are
 doing.

 Maybe you're trying to decode rather than encode?
 Maybe you're passing a string, but should be passing bytes?

 Please show us the exact code you are running, the command you are using
 to run the code, your python version, and the exact output you're getting.
