 i compiled a backport and installed it on cache01. it seems to work fine:
 no new garbage entry got updated since the upgrade.

 i'm working on https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=886894
 and then upload a new version to unstable. once that trickles down to
 bullseye, i'll backport to buster and this will be done.
