 This was indeed the issue.

 In branch `bug_31448_v5` I made a patch disabling debug symbols and
 switching back to `ld.gold`:

 I did builds on two machines with this patch to see that is is also fixing
 #31618.

 However I did not find why it is failing with debug symbols.
