 This patch was great, but just for future reference forking with git is
 done by running...

 {{{
 # clone your github repository locally

 % git clone https://github.com/bounteous/nyx.git
 % cd nyx

 # get the official repository too

 % git remote add upstream https://git.torproject.org/nyx.git
 % git fetch upstream

 # create a branch for you to do your work on

 % git checkout -b my_feature upstream/master
 [do your work]

 # push it back to github so you can share it

 % git push origin my_feature:my_feature
 }}}

 This bases your commit upon the history of the repository you're working
 on, so it merges cleanly.

 Sorry, I know git is pretty beginner unfriendly. ;)
