 I realise now that there is a workaround to be obtained by searching.  I
 tried searching prior to opening this ticket.  There was no obvious search
 mechanism.  So I had to enroll in this Trac system, which is in itself a
 pain in the ass, then open the ticket, and only then was I presented with
 a screen where I could search, and found bunches of old "closed" defects
 matching mine.

 You should not close things as fixed if people such as myself are still
 running into problems.  Until the main download WEB page is updated with
 the correct information, it is not fixed.
