 own). The short story is: we have that requirement right now as we don't
 have fixes for #23631. boklm has written a bit about that issue in
 comment:2:ticket:23631 and I have still some hope in rootless containers
 but that's about it at the moment.

 I think removing the `sudo` requirement while using containers will be
 quite difficult. However adding an option to be able to do builds without
 using containers should be easier. I opened #29981 for that.
