Comment:

 My ticket28452 has the following issues:
 * the smoothing calculations have larger errors when rounding very large
 numbers
   * solution: update the unit tests
   * solution: check for acceptable errors every time the function is run,
 and log?
 * the smoothing calculations appear broken in some cases
