 Is this extra patch any different from #24898?
 Because if it's not, we should rebase this branch on the 0.2.9 backport.

 Otherwise we won't be testing what we actually plan on deploying.

 We can merge it to 0.3.3 soon, and then merge it to 0.2.9 later. Backport
 merges don't cause any conflicts as long as the commits are the same.
