Comment:

 Two branches in my public git repository:
   * `bug8185_diagnostic_032` logs more information if this bug triggers.
   * `bug8185_025` has a fix, assuming my theory above is right.
   * `bug8185_031` is the fix, merged forward to 0.3.1, with merge conflict
 fixed.
