Comment:

 My branch `bug21269_check` adds some testing code to check some possible
 causes of this bug.  If you can reproduce the bug with this code enabled,
 that would be great.

 It's also worth reviewing this for merge into 0.3.0, to see if it helps
 prevent or locate the bug.
