Comment (by arma):

 I set breakpoints all over run_main_loop_once() and they never catch.
 Maybe my gcc has optimized the function so it's hard to gdb on, but it
 looks suspiciously like event_base_loop(base, 0) just never finishes.

 Where in the incoming connections events does it tell event_base_loop that
 it should finish?
