 This serious got pretty big!  Right now the branch looks okay to me, but
 it looks more like 0.3.0 material than 0.2.9.  After all, it is much much
 more than "bugfix only" at this point.

 Is there a subset of this that we should take in 0.2.9, or should we defer
 the whole thing to 0.3.0, or is there a case that every part of this
 should go into 0.2.9?
