Comment:

 The specific instance you point to probably has more to do with
 intermittent network outage than a broken mirror.

 And even though we sometimes actually do run into mirror issues,
 experience shows that the http redirector is strictly worse, i.e. it
 results in way more errors, than using a single well-run mirror.
