 Ok new and clean branch for this in `ticket16943_029_01`

 Gitlab merge request is here:

 The current branch contains the fixup from the first pass made by nickm.
 Since the first commit was a bit of a mess, the fixup now applies to
 multiple commit (instead of the first one).
