 I can't say.  As stated this is running in an OpenVZ container:

       # uname -a
       Linux torsrvi.snydernet.net 2.6.18-400.el5.028stab117.2 #1 SMP Wed
 Dec 17 17:19:54 MSK 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

 No problems seen with running 0.2.9.8 in other OpenVZ / CentOS v6.8 VPSs.
 Maybe there is some peculiarity about the configuration of the OpenVZ
 containers from this VPS vendor?
