 Interesting.  Seems that IP address joins are a known problem area with
 mysql, Googling

    "mysql join on ip address slow"

 pulls many relevant hits including

    http://forums.mysql.com/read.php?24,229499

 which has several alternate approaches and says it has something to do
 with it being a "theta join".
