 Here's a patch I've been playing with. On OpenBSD without libevent2 it
 properly picks libevent 1.x from base ("-levent"). With libevent2
 installed, it picks "-levent_extra -levent_core -levent".

 For other platforms, I've tested it on FreeBSD (with libevent2 installed)
 and it correctly picks just "-levent" as that's all that is needed there.
