 Unfortunately, GDMSESSION is not really a universal way to detect a tiling
 window manager because not everyone uses gdm. Any suggestions on how to
 detect that stumpwm is in use?

 If stumpwm had been properly detected, then the zoom level would (I
 believe) have stayed constant if you switch from full screen to a half-
 screen tile. The zooming is designed to get rid of the grey borders.
