 Apparently, some people are experiencing this with Firefox as well.  See:

 I also see this problem with a browser that was built on Mac OS (not cross
 compiled).  The build I tested with a few minutes ago does not include
 many of our patches either; just the updater patches and a few others.

 It seems like this problem occurs because Tor Launcher opens a modal
 dialog very early during Firefox startup (i.e., the wizard or the
 status/progress window).  That is what the StartupMaster extension that is
 mentioned here does:

 And if I set TOR_SKIP_LAUNCH=1 before starting an ESR38-based Tor Browser,
 I do not see this problem.

 I wonder what changed since ESR 31 to cause this?  I made a comment in the
 Mozilla bug; maybe someone who is watching will have an idea.
