Comment (by mcs):

 The changes you made look good.  Kathy and I have tested TB 5.0a3 with
 app.update.auto = true on Mac OS, Linux 64, and Win7 (using the revised
 Torbutton from #16639).  Real world testing may expose other problems of
 course.
