 Not really.  Windows testing with shell isn't convenient, but that's about
 it.  shell would be okay.

 To avoid the `sleep; kill` how about starting Tor in the background, and
 using $! to get its pid?

 Notes:
   * you should put $DATA_DIR in quotes wherever you use it.
